The following is a list of all the artists that created murals in Illinois post offices during the New Deal. As I’ve been doing my research I felt it might be helpful for others so I decided to write-up an article with my findings.

If you ever visit the National Archives in Washington DC, then you may notice this comes in handy. Some of the records and files are organized by state. Other records are organized by the name of the artists.

I found it useful to have a listing of both. So here it is.

A total of twenty-eight artist created murals in thirty-five Wisconsin Post Office buildings during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Seven of the artist received multiple commissions as noted below. The artist and their awarded sites as listed below.

We have found having a list such as this is convenient when performing research at the National Archives Records and Administration. Any researcher will reveal, that finding information is part of the fun, somethings what you are looking for is catalogued by the artist name. Other times the research materials you need may be cataloged by the city or town, and so on.

Having a list to refer to is helpful on your journey of discovering these wonderful treasures in our nations post offices.

ADDRESS: 217 West Main Street, Salem, Illinois 62881
ARTIST: Vladimir Rousseff
TITLE: Lincoln as Postmaster in New Sale
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The former Salem post office is now a local business. The mural was relocated to local library and can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in a conference room.
YEAR: 1938

What was once a post office is now the home to Raymond James. Since it was a weekend when I visited I was not able to view the inside of the building. I like the patriotic sign in front of the building and above the door.

The mural was moved to the local library and I just made it in time before closing on the Saturday I visited. I must publicly thank the staff of the Salem library for allowing me access to the mural. I know it was just before closing but I can’t thank you enough, especially since I drove so far to view it.

Since the mural was moved to the new Library it appears it is only accessible to viewers who ask. It’s not in the open for all to see. It’s tucked in an employee conference room in the back of the building.
