Virginia Post Offices

ADDRESS: 4917 Catawba Creek Rd., Catawba, Virgina 24070

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well I’ll try to make this one shorter than a thousand. This is the only photograph I have of this post office and here is why.

While I was hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2007, we were approaching a road crossing and one of hikers I was with, mentioned a friend was going to pick him up. Knowing there was possibility going to be a ride waiting to take us into town we sort of all stuck around this particular hiker. As it turns out we were able to get a ride to the gas station and a ride back to the trail. Since this hiker we were with and his friend were kinda in a rush, I ran as close to the post office to take this picture in a hurry.

See the mentality I had when I was hiking, is that when I’m offered a ride I tried to make it as easy as possible for the person providing me that ride. So this was one instance that the driver was actually kinda in a rush so I did not want to push my luck so to speak, so I got back in the car with the other hiker and we headed back to the trail. We ate in the parking lot of the trail head near the road crossing.

Since I was waiting for my sandwich to be made in the gas station I figured I could get a quick photo before we had to head back to the trail. So I was only able to get this one photo of the Catawba Post Office. So that is the story behind my Catawba photo. Not quite a thousand words but you get the idea. ADDRESS: 211 N. Reynolds St., Damascus, Virgina 24236

Damascus is the home of Trail Days. This celebration of the hiker lifestyle draws large crowds to Damascus every year. The annual festival of events includes the very popular hiker parade. This event features vendors, food, and of course hiker events.

The Damascus post office is one of those important locations for thru-hikers as they pickup their re-supply for their hike. I of course look at this one with a different set of eyes these days. I’m a hiker and plan on re-visiting Damascus again some time in the future.

ADDRESS: 120 E. 3rd St., Front Royal, Virginia 22630

Another stop along the Appalachian Trail is Front Royal. Another busy post office, and almost impossible to get clear view of the building.

The Front Royal post office is also a newer building that lacks the character you find in some of the older stand alone buildings. Since this was one of my early photos I only have two. Having a collection of old photos and re-visiting them as I create this article has been enjoyable.
