Guest Post – Roger

Another guest post from Roger. This one is from Struthers, Ohio. Very nice building with a plaster cast above the postmasters door.

One of the reason I love visiting old post offices is for the “little” things that you discover. Struthers is a perfect example, which has interesting artifacts and stuff posted in the old bulletin boards.

What is most interesting to me is the newspaper article when the building was dedicated. I’m not so sure the post office would have such a large turn out in today’s world, so this is a neat thing to see.

Thanks for sharing Roger,

White Hall Illinois Post Office

October 10, 2015 By David W. Gates Jr.

White Hall IL Post Office 62092
White Hall IL Post Office 62092

ADDRESS: 120 South Jacksonville Street, White Hall, Illinois, 62092
ARTIST: Felix Oscar Schlag
TITLE: Potter and His Burro
MEDIUM: Plaster (relief)
STATUS: The White Hall post office is still an active, operating facility, and the relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

During my May 2015 road trip I ran across several buildings during non-business hours. So I had to settle for just the exterior of the buildings for my photographs. Disappointing yes, but then I’ll be back to complete my full documentation including images of the art inside the building.

Until I can get around to that, please enjoy the exterior photos and National Register of Historical Places plaque near the entrance of the White Hall Illinois post office building.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

UPDATE 10/25/2020

I finally made it to White Hall, Illinois to view the artwork inside the building. On Saturday October 24, 2020, I woke up at 2:00am and drove the 5 hours to visit this building. It appears the retail counter is only open for two hours on Saturday and the entire lobby is closed on Sunday’s which is when I visited in 2015. I’ve add the images of the plaster cast artwork. Enjoy!

Arcadia Florida Post Office

September 7, 2015 By David W. Gates Jr.

Arcadia FL Post Office 34266

ADDRESS: 109 N Polk Ave., Arcadia, Florida, 34266
ARTIST: Constance Ortmayer
TITLE: Arcadia
MEDIUM: Plaster (relief)
STATUS: The plaster cast resides on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

There comes a time when you are totally overwhelmed with material that you tend to forget where you left off. Our visit to Arcadia is one example.

My wife and I took our son to visit Grandma and Grandpa in Florida this year. I used one image of the Arcadia building to update my twitter profile but somehow forgot to actually create the article with the rest of the images.

The building has a great lobby with this nice looking built-in display case. Inside are some great examples of USPS artifacts. I took the pictures through the glass so the images below have a glare to them, but you get the idea. I think my favorite artifact is the bear wearing a uniform. I like the belt and pin he is wearing.

I had a difficult time photographing the plaster cast, but eventually turned on the flash and was able to get some better photos. If anyone has any better ideas how to get better pictures that are not so yellow I’d love to hear your feedback.

What do you make of this building, the art and artifacts?  I really like the idea of the display cases and how they have saved and preserved these artifacts. Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
