New Brunswick New Jersey Post Office 08901

ARTIST: George Biddle
TITLE: George Washington with De Witt, Geographer of the Revolutionary Army, Washington Retreating from New Brunswick, and Howe and Cornwallis Entering New Brunswick
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (murals) 2 panels
STATUS: The New Brunswick post office is still an active, operating facility, and the murals can be viewed by interested members of the public. They resided in the lobby on the wall of the main lobby.
YEAR: 1935

ADDRESS: 86 Bayard St., New Brunswick, New Jersey 08901
ARTIST: Ruth Nickerson
TITLE: The Dispatch Rider
MEDIUM: Plaster (sculpture)
STATUS: The New Brunswick post office is still an active, operating facility. As of this writing, I’ve been unable to locate the status or whereabouts of the Ruth Nickerson piece.
YEAR: 1935

I was surprised how easy it was to see the two murals here in Brunswick. They are in the main lobby and not too far up on the walls which makes them a bit easier to view and enjoy.

However, I did visit this post office twice while I was in town, as they do not keep the lobby open after hours.

I’m still looking for the sculpture by Ruth, No one seems to answer the phone when I call, but I’ll keep at it until I can find out.

It only appears the post office uses the first floor of this building, I’m wondering if the sculpture is on the second floor in another room or hallway.

If someone knows or has seen this please leave a comment below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Metuchen New Jersey Post Office

June 17, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Metuchen New Jersey Post Office 08840
Metuchen New Jersey Post Office 08840

ADDRESS: 360 Main St., Metuchen, New Jersey 08840
ARTIST: Harld Ambellan
TITLE: Gardeners
MEDIUM: Plaster (relief)
STATUS: The Metuchen post office is still an active, operating facility, and the relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

Another beautiful building that has been well cared for.

One thing I noticed about reliefs, carvings and sculptures is that because of the three-demential attribute of them, they tend to collect dust. The relief in Metuchen is a perfect example.

After taking close up images of this one you can really see the dust and dirt collect on the top part of the relief. I was temped to ask the staff I could get up there to dust is off and clean it, but I didn’t.

Harrison New Jersey Post Office

Harrison New Jersey Post Office 07029
Harrison New Jersey Post Office 07029

ADDRESS: 427 Harrison Ave., Harrison, New Jersey 07029
ARTIST: Murray J. Roper
TITLE: Industry and the Family
MEDIUM: Plaster (relief)
STATUS: The Harrison post office is still an active, operating facility, and the relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1938

Can someone explain to me why there is a fenced in park in front of this building with signs posted to keep off the grass? I found this a weird and interesting concept. It made me wanting to know more. But I was only here for the post office and relief inside.

That large tree in from of the building made full on front view nearly impossible. So we have some nice up-close angle shots. Enjoy!

If you are from the area, or know why this is, please comment below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
