East Alton Illinois Post Office

November 21, 2015 By David W. Gates Jr.

East Alton IL Post Office 62024
East Alton IL Post Office 62024

ADDRESS: 200 Smith Avenue, East Alton, Illinois 62024
ARTIST: Frances Foy
TITLE: The Letter
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The East Alton post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the retail section of the lobby above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1936

I had awesome weather in early May of 2015. I decided to head out and grab a few Illinois post offices. The best part about the East Alton building is that it’s right in the middle of the neighborhood.

To be honest it almost threw me off as I was driving around to find it. The majority of the time buildings like this are in business districts or on a main road through town. Not the case for the East Alton building.

Prior to visiting I did a little research about the mural. In fact it’s one of the smaller murals I’ve come across. Typically you see murals that span the width of the lobby in a building of this size.

In fact I have a hard time calling this one a mural. I would describe it more as a painting than an actual mural, due to its physical size.

Additional notes, the retail lobby was closed when I visited. The images below were taken through the glass doors. I think they turned out pretty good.

I really like the light colors and nature feeling this mural gives exhibits. What do you like about this painting/mural? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Pittsfield Illinois Post Office

November 7, 2015 By David W. Gates Jr.

Pittsfield IL Post Office 62363
Pittsfield IL Post Office 62363

ADDRESS: 129 South Madison Street, Pittsfield, Illinois, 62363
ARTIST: William Samuel Schwartz
TITLE: River Boat and Bridge
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Pittsfield post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1938

The first thing that sticks when viewing this mural are deep colors.

The building itself is also unique. Most of the New Deal Building have flat roofs and have a box-like appearance. The Pittsfield building has a roof you can clearly see along with one of those decorative gazebos things on the top. Does someone out there know what the technical name of this is called?

When I was younger I poured over Architectural Digest magazines. I enjoyed seeing all the different style houses. I think my post office obsession is a way of feeding this piece of my life. I enjoy all the different style buildings. This also explains why I also notice such things as the roof and various decorative bricks used in the construction of the buildings.

Where one person just views it as another building or post office. I notice the details and effort that was put into buildings during this era.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Gillespie Illinois Post Office

October 31, 2015 By David W. Gates Jr.

Gillespie IL Post Office 62033
Gillespie IL Post Office 62033

ADDRESS: 200 West Spruce Street, Gillespie, Illinois, 62033
ARTIST: Gustaf Dalstrom
TITLE: Illinois Farm
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Gillespie post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1935

I told myself when I first stated this project that I wasn’t going to post buildings I don’t have the artwork for. Well, the more I think about this it doesn’t truly reflect the work I’ve done to this point. In addition I can always re-visit the building and update the article.

So it is with this line of thinking that I’ve decided to proceed with posting the Gillespie article with-out having the pictures of the mural inside. Finding the lobbies closed is one of the challenges of visiting buildings during the weekend. If I remember correctly it was a Sunday and apparently in Gillespie they do NOT keep the building open, including the lobby.

So my next challenge is to get there on a Saturday when they are open, but for now please enjoy the exterior of the building.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

10/26/2020 UPDATE

Over the last weekend I drove south to visit 4 buildings, which I did not have the artwork. Gillespie was on building during this road trip. This mural is on the smaller size but the subject and style is wonderful. Enjoy!
