The mural in Bridgeport was one of the winning entries of the 48-States Mural Competition. It was painted by Richard Kenah and installing in 1940. I love the colors and feeling of this mural.

Belding Michigan Post Office

May 28, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Belding MI Post Office 48809
Belding MI Post Office 48809

ADDRESS: 201 E. Main St., Belding, Michigan, 48809
TITLE: Belding Brothers and Their Silk Industry
ARTIST: Marvin Beerbohm
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Belding post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. The mural resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1943

I’m guessing the Belding Brother’s were in the silk industry? I’m just guessing here but if you know more about this by all means please comment and share below.

We visited Belding during the summer of 2015. We had great weather and I’m pleased with the images.

I was not pleased with how many times I needed to photograph the signature. The bright shiny brass plate made photographing it difficult. It didn’t matter what angle I tried to photograph it, I kept getting a reflection or the images were dark. I think this is the first mural signature I took more than a few pictures. Not one turned out exactly how I wanted so I just posted all the ones you see below, which show what is written on the brass plate.

This building is very handsome and well maintained. What do you think of this one? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Greenville Michigan Post Office

April 16, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Greenville MI Post Office 48838
Greenville MI Post Office 48838

ADDRESS: 119 W. Cass St., Greenville, Michigan, 48838
ARTIST: Charles W. Thwaites
TITLE: Lumbering
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Greenville post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. The mural resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1940

Today’s featured post office is from Greenville, Michigan. So I’m sitting here creating this articles and my first thoughts are about the Greenville Tennessee post office I visited last year.

I find it interesting that both the Greeneville Tennessee and the Greenville Michigan post offices both have artwork. This made me wonder what other states have a “Greenville” and also have art. It will be interesting to compile all this and sort by the towns and see what town name has the most artwork.

Enough about my thoughts and curiosity, how about that mural? Beautiful piece I tell ya. Although, I associate lumbering more with Wisconsin or Maine than I do with Michigan. This is the same artists that painted the mural in Plymouth, Wisconsin and Chilton, Wisconsin. The more buildings I visit, the more I tend to see the work from the same artists.

What are your thoughts on this building and mural? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
