Ohio Post Offices

Former Toledo Ohio Central Post Office

May 10, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Former Toledo Ohio Post Office
Former Toledo Ohio Post Office

ADDRESS: 1300 Jefferson Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43604

Every now and then I’ll come across a really interesting building that has history and charm. This was the case during my visit to the former Toledo Ohio Central Post Office. As I was driving around my girlfriend was working the browser on the phone and digging up some good details on this building. No sense in repeating what has already been written. This building was added to the National Historic of Places Registry. But you get all the pictures here at Post Office Freak.

For more juicy stuff on this great building head over to this nice article from the Toledo Blade.

Wikipedia also has a nice write-up for the Jefferson building.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Clyde Ohio Post Office

March 23, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Clyde OH Post Office 43410
Clyde OH Post Office 43410

ADDRESS: 131 Buckeye Street, Clyde, Ohio 43410
ARTIST: William M. Krusen
TITLE: Agriculture
MEDIUM: Wood (carving)
STATUS: The Clyde post office is still an active, operating facility. The carving resides in the lobby above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

What is so special about the Clyde Ohio Post Office? Well if you are a regular follower then you will know that some of my favorite post offices are one’s with grand murals. So I guess you are waiting for a grand mural inside the Clyde Ohio Post Office right? Not quite, but what makes this one so special is the wood carving. It’s different, it’s not a mural so it adds to the variety of artwork found at our nations post offices.

In fact, murals were one reason I spend so much time visiting post offices. When I initially discovered there were more than just murals you could imagine my surprise and delight. Not only does our national postal system have murals, but you may also find, wood carvings, plaster cast, metal designs and stone work. This is what makes my day. This is one reason I hate to see post offices up for sale or shut down. Its the artwork, its the character, its the design its the whole enchilada, that keeps me coming back for more.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Sylvania Ohio Post Office

March 16, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Sylvania OH Post Office 43560
Sylvania OH Post Office 43560

ADDRESS: 5745 Post Office Way, Sylvania, Ohio 43560
ARTIST: Melik Finkle
TITLE: Trilobites
MEDIUM: Plaster (relief)
STATUS: The cast resides in an enclosed bulletin board in the lobby of the building.
YEAR:  1940

A new post office, I thought to myself as I pulled up to this one. I was a bit confused because my sources mentioned there would be artwork. So naturally I had in my mind I would be visiting an older square 1930/1940 building. However, that was not the case for the Sylvania Ohio post office.

Needless to say I was really surprised to find the plaster relief artwork inside the new building. Not quite the fascination of a mural but since the new post office moved and installed the plaster relief, its much more accessible. The artwork is protected behind glass and set at a nice easy level for people to really get up close to the work. I really enjoyed observing this up close.

Having it behind glass was a challenge when I was taking pictures but at least I was able to get them. I’m delighted the post office moved the artwork into the new building as opposed to leaving it behind at the old building. Just in case you missed the original building I posted the pictures of this one yesterday.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
