Perrysburg Ohio Former Post Office

July 5, 2014 By David W. Gates Jr.

Former Perrysburg OH Post Office 43551
Former Perrysburg OH Post Office 43551

ADDRESS: 117 East Second Street, Perrysburg, Ohio, 43551
ARTIST: Glenn Moore Shaw
TITLE: Building of Fort Meigs 1813
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: Need to locate
YEAR: 1942

It’s always a difficult decision to decide if I’m going to post an incomplete article. By incomplete I mean, I don’t have photos of the mural. But the way I rationalize it, is that at least I can get the building documented and out there for you all to enjoy. As time permits or if you have photos of the mural you’d like to contribute please comment below.

My initial visit was during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, consequently most businesses were closed. I did however, peek through the window and discovered the artwork is still on the wall. This prompted me to start asking a bunch of questions to my self. So I’m wondering why it was never moved to the new building? Maybe a little more research and investigation and I’ll be able to find out. Unless of course you have something to share with us? Do you happen to know why the mural was never moved? Was it even an option at the time? When was the building sold? I can’ t want to get back to Perrysburg to see this in person.

For now here the exterior photos of the building.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Wapakoneta Ohio Post Office

Wapakoneta OH Post Office 45895
Wapakoneta OH Post Office 45895

ADDRESS: 12 Willipie Street, Wapakoneta, Ohio, 45895
ARTIST: Joseph Limarzi
TITLE: Wapakoneta and American History
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Wapakeoneta post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. The mural resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1937

I visited Wapakoneta back in November of 2013. I remember it was difficult to get good photos of the exterior of the building. There is also a nice mural in the lobby.

My first impression of the mural is how colorful it is. The bright red, blue, yellow and green colors made for a cheerful painting. There is a lot going on this piece, with lots of people performing different task. What jumps out at you first? The colors, the characters? the animals? Please share your comments below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Crestline Ohio Post Office

May 10, 2014 By David W. Gates Jr.

Crestline OH Post Office 44827
Crestline OH Post Office 44827

ADDRESS: 244 North Seltzer Street, Crestline, Ohio, 44827
ARTIST: Gifford Beal
TITLE: The Crossroads – Crestline, Ohio
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Crestline post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1943

Another Ohio gem is the Crestline Post Office.  During my visit in November of last year. I specifically set out to photograph the buildings with artwork. I was not disappointed when I arrived in Crestline. The very fist thing that stood out for me was the size of the building. Most of the building’s in smaller towns are just the one story box type. The Crestline building is an impressive two-stories.

In addition to the size of the building is a wonderful mural in the lobby. Although, it appeared rather dark to me, the subject matter was interesting. I like the locomotives in the painting, they just kind of stuck out to me.

Another feature that stood out, was the two people in the center forefront of the painting. Why would the artist paint them so close together? Maybe the artist was thinking this was a noisy place and in order to hear the other person you needed to be right up in the other person’s face to hear them. On the other hand, it almost looks like they are starting to fight, or maybe they are just lovers. What do you think?

I’d love to hear your impressions of this painting.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
