Gibson City Illinois Post Office

February 25, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Gibson CIty IL Post Office 60936
Gibson CIty IL Post Office 60936

ADDRESS: 127 East 9th Street, Gibson City, Illinois, 60936
ARTIST: Frances Foy
TITLE: Hiawatha Returning with Minnehaha
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Gibson City post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be view by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1940

My travels today brought me through Gibson City. I will be honest I did not research this post office and had no idea what it looked like. When I finally spotted it, I was excited because it had the appearance of an older building.

I started taking pictures of the exterior, when a postal worker spotted what I was doing. He paused a few times and walked back into the building.

I continued to take pictures and then headed inside. As I was walking through the front door a man stopped me in the entrance and asked what I was doing. He had a worried look on his face, but because I was caught off guard the only thing I could come up with is that I’m just visiting and taking pictures. He asked what for and I just mentioned I’m a fan of older post offices and I’m interested in the mural.

After I regained my thoughts I introduced myself and I think this set him at ease. Once he understood I wasn’t a threat he proceeded to show me the writeup on the wall regarding the mural and artist. I never asked but he appeared to be the postmaster as he headed back into the office with the postmaster sign on the door.

While we were taking he mentioned several other people have been by to photograph the mural. He even mention one lady had written a book about the mural. I proceeded to inquire about the book and he ran and got it for me to look at. This was really exciting to me and I’m so grateful I met him and learned something new.

The name of the book is “Let’s Look for Transportation in Illinois Post Offices” by: Mary Emma Thompson, Ph.D

I look forward to looking for this book later when I have time to reflect more on this visit. Has anyone else read or seen this book in print somewhere?

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago Illinois (Uptown Station) Post Office

February 18, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago IL Uptown Station Post Office 60640
Chicago IL Uptown Station Post Office 60640

ADDRESS: 4850 North Broadway Street, Chicago, Illinois 60640
ARTIST: Henry Varnum Poor
TITLE: Carl Sandburg & Louis Sullivan
MEDIUM: Ceramic (titles)
STATUS: The Chicago Uptown Station is still an active, operating facility, and the titles can be viewed by interested members of the public. The tiles are located in the lobby on the wall above the retail service counters.
YEAR: 1943

The good thing about visiting post offices in the city is the abundance of artificial light. It was only about 5:00 pm when I visited but the sun had already set so it was rather dark.

While I was there a person at the entrance was opening the door for people. I think I spooked him off because when I started taking pictures he ran off across the street.

The post office has two eagle sculptures draping the front entrance. They appear to be carved out of granite and are an impressive decorative feature. The lobby also contains two great murals. Both are excellent examples of artwork commissioned by the Section of Fine Arts.

The stamped stone list the following, James A Farley as postmaster general, John M Carmody as the Federal Works Administrator, W Englebert Reynolds as commissioner of Public Buildings, Louis A Simon Supervising Architect, Neal A Melick Supervising Engineer, Howard Loveweil Cheney as Consulting Architect. The date on the building is 1939.

Updated November 2015

I had the pleasure of visiting this building again during the daylight hours in October of 2015. The lighting was so much better. I took the time to get additional detail photos of the ceramic title murals. As I’m updating this article I’ve decided to keep the older photos in addition to the new photos. This contrast represents the challenges I face when visiting post offices during the winter months here in the midwest.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago Illinois (Logan Square) Post Office

February 12, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago IL Logan Square Post Office 60647
Chicago IL Logan Square Post Office 60647

ADDRESS: 2339 North California Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60647
ARTIST: Hildreth Meiere
TITLE: The Post
MEDIUM: Metal (design)
STATUS: The Chicago Logan Square post office is still an active, operating facility. It is also known as the Roberto Clemente Station. The metal design can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the retail entrance.
YEAR: 1937

The Logan Square Illinois (Chicago) IL post office is also known as the Roberto Clemente Station. The stone logo above the front entrance of the building indicates this post office as (Logan Square). However, when you perform a search for the address, the name Roberto Clemente appears.

This happens to be the second post office building I’ve come across with this type of architecture. The Pilsen Station is very similar in design. The post office was named in honor of Roberto Clemente a famous baseball player from the 1960 & 1970 according to this USA Today Article. Another great example of art commissioned by the Section of Fine Arts.

While looking around I discovered the corner-stone indicating the postmaster and treasury. The stone was behind the Fedex box making this difficult to photograph, it reads as follows: Henry Morgenthau Jr. as the Secretary of the Treasury, James A. Farley as postmaster general. Louis A. Simon as supervising architect, Neal A. MeLick supervising engineer and John C. Bollenbacher. The date on the building reads 1935.

Update November 2015

Along with visiting the Chicago Uptown Station I was able to revisit Logan Square and a few other buildings. I figured since I had the morning free and the sun was out it was the perfect time to photograph. I was never happy with the photos of this one so it was great that I was able to re-visit and get better photographs.

Another bonus from my re-visit is the removal of the FedEx box. This was obstructing the corner stone of the building. During my first visit I had to take an awkward angle photo in order to get the corner stone. When I revisited in October since the FedEx box was gone I was able to get better photos.

As you can see from the cars and people it’s almost impossible to get an un-obstructive photo of this very busy post office. I stood around for a long time waiting for that perfect full shot of the building but it never happened. I was close, when one car pulled away another showed up. When the front was almost clean I’d have people walk in front of the building.

I’ve come to conclusion that it’s a two visit process in order to get all the photos I desire for a building. The first visit needs to occur when during business hours so I can view any artwork or artifacts that are inside the building. The second is to visit during non-business hours and hopefully get photos of the exterior of the building with-out any obstructions. At least that has been my experiences working the big congested cities.
