Former Fond du Lac Wisconsin Post Office

July 21, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Fond Du Lac (Former) WI 54935
Fond du Lac (Former) WI 54935

ADDRESS: 19 E. 1st St. Fond du Lac, Wisconsin 54935
ARTIST: Boris Gilbertson
TITLE: Birds and Animals of the Northwest
MEDIUM: Limestone (Reliefs) 11 individual reliefs
STATUS: The original building is no longer the post office. The 11 lime- stone reliefs are on the exterior of the building and can be ob- served by interested parties.
YEAR: 1937

On Saturday’s I like to highlight some of the older buildings and their artwork. The former Fond du Lac post office is a perfect example of a building with interesting artwork. The difference about this building is that the artwork is on the exterior for all to enjoy 24×7.

The old post office building is massive. I briefly stopped inside to take a look at the lobby, but there really wasn’t anything noticeable since the new owners have purchased the building.

There are eleven reliefs and I’m wondering if anyone knows if each one has a specific name? Do you have any more info regarding these? What have you read or seen in regards to them?

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Mayville Wisconsin Post Office

June 23, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Mayville WI Post Office 53050
Mayville WI Post Office 53050

ADDRESS: 7 N. School St., Mayville, Wisconsin, 53050
ARTIST: Peter Roiter
TITLE: Wisconsin Rural Scene
MEDIUM: Mural
STATUS: This post office is still active and the mural viewable by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1940

Saturday’s I like to showcase post offices with murals or other forms of artwork. I stopped at in Mayville on my way home from Winneconne, WI. I was visiting my dad and doing some fishing. I decided to take the long road home. Mayville was a great stop which has a wonderful mural. I found it really interesting the placement of the building. Its situated near the center of town on a very large corner lot. When looking down the main street is the first thing you see as you look down the road.

I love the man figure in this painting. I think it’s the action or hard-working appearance seems to standout the most for me. Holding two bails of hay in overalls says something about this man and his work.

Some other goodies are two framed plaques in the lobby. One describes Mayville as a Main street community and other lists former postmasters. Overall a great visit and with some wonderful stuff to see.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Mt Morris IL Post Office 61054

ADDRESS: 21 W. Main St., Mount Morris, Illinois, 61054
ARTIST: Dale Nichols
TITLE: The Growth of Mount Morris
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Mount Morris post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

Mount Morris, was another stop during an early 2012 road trip. I met two really nice people in the lobby. I was also told I was not the first one to photograph and visit this post office. The USPS worker mentioned of a lady that was visiting old post offices as well and taking pictures of the murals. I wonder who it was? Do any of my readers know? I’d love to connect with this person.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
