I don’t remember your name, but I will not forget your kindness and interest. My wife rushed me out and I didn’t have time to finish looking at the wonderful file of articles and information you have on this wonderful mural and building. Apparently we were late for another appointment. I wish I would have had more time to read more, but it will have to wait until another time.

This is my second visit to your building. The first time I visited was on a Sunday and I was not able to view the magnificent mural you have displayed in the lobby. So I returned a few weeks ago on a Saturday in November of 2013. I was able to observe and photograph this wonderful artwork.

Thank you so much for speaking to me about it and sharing the wonderful artifacts you have in regards to it. This is the stuff I live for. I could have spent another half a day just reading through what you had.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Grand Ledge Michigan Post Office

December 7, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 118 E. Jefferson St. Grand Ledge, Michigan, 48837
ARTIST: James Calder
TITLE: Waiting for the  Mail
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Grand Ledge post offices is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. The mural resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1938

Welcome to Grand Ledge, Michigan. It’s great to see a healthy and well maintained building. That sums up my observance of the Grand Ledge Post Office. Although it was a Sunday the lobby was open and I was able to view the mural. Even though it was from a distance because of the way the lobby is set up with the vestibule I was still able to get several photos of the mural.

I also found it rather amusing chasing after the corner-stone on this one. As you can see from the photos. It’s in the lower left corner of the building. What I noticed, is that over the years it appears they have built up some landscaping. I had to pat down some of the vegetation in order to get a clean shot of the corner-stone. Yes, that’s my tripod feet in one of corner-stone pictures. As I was doing this I imagine one day someone is going to stop me and ask what the heck I’m doing and why I’m in the bushes or flower beds. But for now I’m successfully documented another building. All for your pleasure of course.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

YEAR: 1939

Welcome to our fifth and final post featuring the Oak Park, Illinois Post Office. For the past few days we’ve been touring this wonderful building. Part one featured the building and artifacts housed here in Oak Park. Part 2-5 featured the four individual murals in the lobby.

There is a lot to see here, I really enjoyed my visit and even had one gentlemen approach me and comment. “They don’t make them like this anymore”. I agreed and respond with something to the effect, “they sure don’t”. I probably never would have know how wonderful this building was had our fan Deb not pointed it out to me.

I’ve hoped your enjoyed this series. What was your favorite part of the series? Do you have a favorite mural? Did you like the Rural Delivery buggy? the photographs in the lobby? Please comment below with your favorite part of the series.  And I must ask, what other post offices do would you like to see here on Post Office Freak?

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
