Van Buren Arkansas Post Office

February 22, 2019 By David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 22 S. 7th St. Van Buren, Arkansas 72956
ARTIST: E. Martin Hennings
TITLE: The Chosen Site
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Van Buren post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1938

Van Buren was another stop during our April 2018 vacation. It is Monday night Christmas Eve as I’m writing this last article for my current Arkansas collection. February 16, 2019, I’m just getting to editing this and posting it.

The bad news is I think I’m caught up with all the buildings I have photos of. The good news is the kids wants to go back to Arkansas and dig for diamonds again at the Crater of Diamonds State Park, so we most likely will be heading down here agin soon. Enjoy the pictures.

I’ve been busy getting the Wisconsin Books together so stay tuned for those. This new WordPress editor is taking some getting used to. argh!! Just venting.

Take care and thanks for following along.

David W. Gates Jr.

Guest Post – Roger

The mural in Bridgeport was one of the winning entries of the 48-States Mural Competition. It was painted by Richard Kenah and installing in 1940. I love the colors and feeling of this mural.

Today’s featured post is another one visited and photographed by Roger.

Belding Michigan Post Office

May 28, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Belding MI Post Office 48809
Belding MI Post Office 48809

ADDRESS: 201 E. Main St., Belding, Michigan, 48809
TITLE: Belding Brothers and Their Silk Industry
ARTIST: Marvin Beerbohm
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Belding post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. The mural resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1943

I’m guessing the Belding Brother’s were in the silk industry? I’m just guessing here but if you know more about this by all means please comment and share below.

We visited Belding during the summer of 2015. We had great weather and I’m pleased with the images.

I was not pleased with how many times I needed to photograph the signature. The bright shiny brass plate made photographing it difficult. It didn’t matter what angle I tried to photograph it, I kept getting a reflection or the images were dark. I think this is the first mural signature I took more than a few pictures. Not one turned out exactly how I wanted so I just posted all the ones you see below, which show what is written on the brass plate.

This building is very handsome and well maintained. What do you think of this one? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
