STATUS: The South Orange post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1936

Note to self again, taking photos of the exterior of this one in the late afternoon is a challenge. The sun sets behind the building making it difficult to shoot into the sun and get the front of the building. I was here about 5:30 in the afternoon.

The lobby is also not open after hours, so I’ll need to plan another visit to photograph the mural.

UPDATE

South Orange was one stop during my August 2021 trip. I made it a point to visit during business hours. The plan was to visit first thing in the morning for the sunrise and then to get the inside images of the mural. My timing was perfect and I was able to achieve both in August. Check this one off my list.

One major disappointment is the ceiling light fixture hangs right in front of the mural. Is nearly impossible to get an unobstructed view and photograph of the mural. Multiple close up shots help to show the real beauty of this one.

Summit New Jersey Post Office

TITLE: Arrival of Fist Train and Stage Coach Attack
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (murals) 2 panels
STATUS: The Summit post office is still an active, operating facility, however, the murals have been reported destroyed at the time of this writing. Stage Coach Attack previously resided on the wall above the postmaster’s door. Arrival of the First Train previously resided in the main lobby above the service windows.
YEAR: 1935

Late in the day 6:30 PM, does not make for good photo opportunities of the front side of the Summit post office. Just in case you wanted to know that.

Summit is another sad story where the murals (two) have been reported missing, lost or destroyed. It would be nice to learn the who, what, and when of this story. More work for me to investigate. Unless, of course you know the scoop on this one. By all means please comment and share below.

The lobby is open, but the retail section is locked with the metal grate you see in the gallery below. I also found the cornerstone to be interesting in this one. The bright white granite against the standard red brick really makes it pop out at you. The overall design is also interesting to note as the format of the lettering is slightly different that what you would have seen on a regular building.

UPDATE

Summit was another stop during my August 2021 road trip. I wanted a better exterior image of the building. When I was here in May, the sun was setting behind the building, and it was difficult to get a good image with full light on the front of the building. Plus we had wonderful blue skies in August which makes for a more colorful image.

STATUS: The Nutley post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the superintendent’s door.
YEAR: 1939

One of the things I’d like to learn is why or how the office door is the superintendent’s door and not the postmaster’s door? Since I do not work for the postal service, I have no idea how the rank and job titles work or were established.

If you work for the postal service or have further information on this, please comment below.

By the way, how did I get crooked photos of the cornerstone again? I must have been in an a hurry again and was moving fast to get what I could before people and cars got in the way.

Nutley is another example where it is almost impossible to photograph the mural without any obstructions. That light fixture really hangs low making it difficult to enjoy the mural entirely.

I honestly don’t think it would take much effort to raise the light fixture.
