Millburn New Jersey Post Office

June 19, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Millburn New Jersey Post Office 07041
Millburn New Jersey Post Office 07041

ADDRESS: 300 Millburn Ave., Millburn, New Jersey 07041
ARTIST: Gerald Foster
TITLE: Revolutionary Engagement at Bridge in Millburn—1790
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Millburn post office is still an active, operating facility, however, the mural has been reported missing, lost or destroyed. It previously resided in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

Before headed out to New Jersey, I had a feeling I wasn’t going to see the mural here. So I never intended to spend a great deal of time here.

However, trying to photograph that cornerstone took some extra maneuvering in the bushes.

If anyone has any further information regarding the fate of this one, we’d love to hear from you. I’ve managed to find one image of the mural from the National Archives records.

Riverside New Jersey Post Office

June 14, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Riverside New Jersey Post Office 08075
Riverside New Jersey Post Office 08075

ADDRESS: 4 W. Scott St., Riverside, New Jersey 08075
ARTIST: John Poehler
TITLE: The Town of Progress—1855
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Riverside post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the mailbox room.
YEAR: 1937

Looks like an addition to the right side of this building. The lobby also appears to have been remodeled. The mural remains above what must have been the postmaster’s office. I think at some point they converted this office into more space for mailboxes. The mural has the cutout at the bottom, which would have indicated it was meant to fit around the door mantle.

Note to self, the lobby was open after hours, this made viewing and photographing the mural a successful trip.

What do you think? please comment below.

Short Hills New Jersey Post Office

June 13, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Short Hills New Jersey Post Office
Short Hills New Jersey Post Office

ADDRESS: 30 Chatham Road., Short Hills, New Jersey 07078
ARTIST: Ernest Lawson
TITLE: Short Hills Landscape
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Short Hills post office is still an active, operating facility, however, the mural has been reported missing, lost or destroyed. It previously resided in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1937

Another stop where the lobby was closed. I wan’t disappointed, as I knew the mural from this one was not in the lobby. It has been reported missing, lost or destroyed. I’ll need to do some further research on the status of this one.

I did however, enjoy the live music that was being played across the street at the restaurant. I did a short video of the exterior of the building while the band was playing. I’ll post that to the YouTube channel when I get a chance.

That cornerstone was a bit of challenge to photograph, but I think it turned out ok. I briefly though about carving hedge trimmers with me during my visits, but I’m not so sure the postal service would appreciate me cutting their bushes, but maybe they wouldn’t mind. IDK.
