STATUS: The Peoria courthouse is still an active, operating facility. However, the post offices no longer operates out of this building. The reliefs can be viewed by interested members of the public. They reside on the exterior of the building.
YEAR: 1939

Another beautiful day for photographing old post offices. These were taken back in June of 2015. Here is why I’m just posting it now. See I take road trips and perform my site visits way in advanced of ever creating the articles. So when I return I have a backlog of photos that need to be sorted, saved and renamed. After this is done I then need to resize the photos. After I resize the photos I need to create the article you are now enjoying.

All this work means I have a pretty large backlog of work that needs to get done. Eventually as the winter months keep me inside more I’ll be able to catch up. But for now please enjoy the beautiful former Peoria post office and court-house.

I was pleasantly surprised these are located on the exterior of the building. No need to wait for the lobby to open or to have other objects in the way. I can just walk up and start photographing. What are your thoughts of limestone reliefs? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Former Fond du Lac Wisconsin Post Office

July 21, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Fond Du Lac (Former) WI 54935
Fond du Lac (Former) WI 54935

ADDRESS: 19 E. 1st St. Fond du Lac, Wisconsin 54935
ARTIST: Boris Gilbertson
TITLE: Birds and Animals of the Northwest
MEDIUM: Limestone (Reliefs) 11 individual reliefs
STATUS: The original building is no longer the post office. The 11 lime- stone reliefs are on the exterior of the building and can be ob- served by interested parties.
YEAR: 1937

On Saturday’s I like to highlight some of the older buildings and their artwork. The former Fond du Lac post office is a perfect example of a building with interesting artwork. The difference about this building is that the artwork is on the exterior for all to enjoy 24×7.

The old post office building is massive. I briefly stopped inside to take a look at the lobby, but there really wasn’t anything noticeable since the new owners have purchased the building.

There are eleven reliefs and I’m wondering if anyone knows if each one has a specific name? Do you have any more info regarding these? What have you read or seen in regards to them?

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

On Saturday’s I like to highlight some of the more elaborate post offices I have been too. Today’s featured post office is Evanston Illinois. Evanston was one of my first exposures to what would become my addiction to post offices. The sheer size and memorabilia inside the Evanston post offices is really amazing. At least at the time I started this post office obsession.

I initially visited this one in 2003 and remember spending more time than usual when I visit post offices. I had no idea the lobby had this great exhibit, It was like visiting a museum. The exterior of the building reminds you of the great museums downtown like the Art institute or the Field Museum.

The artwork is large and beautiful. I don’t think I really appreciated it at the time but looking back and reflecting on my visit, I’ve come to realize what a treasure the Evanston, IL Post Office truly is. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed my visit.

Thanks for reading

David W. Gates Jr.

Updated 11/17/2020

I made another trip to the Evanston, Illinois post office. The very fist time I visited this building was prior to me really taking my time and getting good photographs. I also never took a picture of the cornerstone on this building. It’s in the lower right, when facing the front of the building. Here are the new photos. I took a bunch of picture but only posted a few here. Enjoy!
