Nauvoo Illinois Post Office

January 25, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Nauvoo IL Post Office 62354
Nauvoo IL Post Office 62354

ADDRESS: 55 N. Barnett St., Nauvoo, Illinois 62354

I had no idea Nauvoo was such a touristy town. Nauvoo is also the location of the Nauvoo Illinois State Park. I really enjoyed the drive through this town and surrounding area.

I found a metal plaque bolted into the side of the building with the year 1962 and the name Walt Zimmerman. There is no other indication of who this is. Something more to investigate or a topic for another article.

The Nauvoo post office was dedicated in 1962 while John F. Kennedy was president. J. Edward Day as postmaster general and H. W. Brawley as deputy postmaster general.

Thanks for reading,

David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago (Ravenswood) Illinois Post Office

January 23, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Ravenswood (Chicago) IL PO 60625
Ravenswood (Chicago) IL Post Office 60625

Address: 2522 W. Lawrence Ave., Chicago, Illinois 60625

While I was in the city waiting to meet up with my girlfriend I decided to stop and take some pictures. Ravenswood Station was one on the list I had for today. It’s your typical newer post office with no significant artifacts, pictures, dedication plaque or murals.

Since it is located on busy Lawrence Ave. it was a bit of a challenge to get good up-obstructed photos of the building. But I persisted and was awarded with a few good shots.

Thanks

David W. Gates Jr.

Carthage Illinois Post Office

January 22, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Carthage IL Post Office 62321
Carthage IL Post Office 62321

ADDRESS: 615 Main Street, Carthage, Illinois 62321
ARTIST: Karl Kelpe
TITLE: Pioneers Tilling the Soil and Building Log Cabin
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Carthage post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

Another post office on my two-day road trip in Illinois.  The corner-stone on the front of the building indicates the following. Henry Morgenthau Jr. as secretary of the treasury. James A. Farley as postmaster general, Louis A. Simon as supervising architect and George O. Von Nerta as supervising engineer.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
