Its hard to get excited about your standard post office sometimes. I will say this, It’s also amazing how much influence the building codes must be for each individual shopping center. For this particular one, all business signs are identical blue lettering with white background.

Just another observation I’ve made taking photos of post offices.

Des Plaines Illinois (Downtown Station) Post Office

Our outing today brought us to the downtown Des Plaines post office. This one is quite interesting from a building sense. There is a main entrance on Lee St. which is the one pictured below. There is also a parking lot and lobby entrance at the rear of the building.

Since we were also in the area, I also drove my girlfriend by the original McDonald’s. I don’t remember it being fenced off but there it is. It was cold out and the sidewalks were still full of snow so we did not walk around. Its winter so what else should I have expected.

STATUS: The Hamilton post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1941

January 10, 2012

Hamilton was my goal for this road trip. My research reveled that it had an interesting mural. This fact also brought to my attention, that it most likely is an older post office. So with this knowledge in hand, a tank full of gas, two ham sandwiches, I set out and drove to Hamilton Illinois.

I was not disappointed when I first spotted the building. The design and look of the building immediately gave away its age. I took pictures of the exterior and the corner-stone at the lower left corner then headed inside.

The mural is beautiful and even more impressive in person. The artist signed the mural on the lower left corner of the piece. Viewing these works of art is a delight and the reason I created this website.
