Chicago Illinois (Pilsen Station) Post Office

May 22, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago (Pilsen) IL Post Office 60608

ADDRESS: 1859 Ashland Ave., Chicago, Illinois 60608

If you have ever been to Chicago you know just how busy the city is. Pilsen was no exception. It was difficult to get a good clear shot of the building but here it is. My initial visit was in May of 2003. I imagine I’ll be back at least one of two more times for better photographs.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Mount Carroll Illinois Post Office 61053
Mount Carroll Illinois Post Office 61053

ADDRESS: 211 North Clay Street, Mount Carroll, Illinois, 61053
ARTIST: Irene Bianucci
TITLE: Rural Scenes – Wakarusa Valley
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Mount Carroll post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1941

Taking a break from my California series of photographs. Saturday’s I like to feature a more in-depth article about some of the fancier post offices. So today I bring you the Mount Carroll, IL Post Office.

In March of this year I took several road trips to specifically take pictures of some of the ones with murals. The Mount Carroll was one of the stops. It was another beautiful day for a drive and great lighting to photograph.

What really stood out for on this visit was just how clean it looked. I’m guessing the meticulous landscaping well maintained exterior has a lot to do with it. I’m glad someone has taken the time to preserve this building, and mural.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Dekalb Illinois Post Office

April 29, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Dekalb IL Post Office 60115

ADDRESS: 600 E. Lincoln Hwy., DeKalb, Illinois 60115

The DeKalb, Illinois post office was another one on my road trip visits in March. It was a Sunday so the parking lot was empty and easy to get a nice photo of the building. The cloudy weather today made for a darker photo but at least it is the complete building.

You see some days I just don’t remember things. Take this trip for example. It just so happened I was in town to visit the Historic Egyptian Theater on this day. But I don’t remember the name of the show. It was the dude with the animals. My cousins, aunts and uncles had told me about it. It was a cool show and I think the highlight was the cheetah.

Updates February 2013,

So now that I’m revisiting this article, I did a little research and fount out it was Jack Hanna. That was the show I went to see and of course after the show had to visit the local post office.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
