Otis Grant Collins Chicago Illinois Post Office

November 17, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 2302 S. Pulaski, Chicago, Illinois 60623

Welcome to another post office named in honor of someone. Who is Otis Grant Collins? I’m using a life line here. Can anyone tell me who Otis Grant Collins is? What he or she is famous for and or what they did.

As for the building itself, A nice old solid brick building. Unfortunately this one has seen some really hard Chicago winters. Sandstone corners are not match for the abundant amount of salt and debris used on the streets and sidewalks. You will notice several corner stones in this condition in Chicago. Sad but I did my best to get close-ups of what is left.

On another note, it was almost impossible to get a clear un-obstructed photo of this building. At least the day I visited which was a Saturday. Everyone was about and about doing their chores. In larger cities it’s almost a given in order to get good photos to visit both on a Saturday and a Sunday. The Saturday is for getting close-ups and anything that inside the building such as a mural. Leave Sunday for the exterior photos of the building. These are just a few of the things I’ve learned working on this project.

I need to use a life line? Can you help me? Do you know? Would you share it with me if you did know? Please leave your comments below.

Saint Louis Missouri Main Post Office – Part 10

January 10, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 1720 Market Street, Saint Louis, Missouri, 61355
TITLE: The River
ARTIST: Edward Millman
MEDIUM: (mural)
STATUS: The mural resides on the wall in the lobby.
YEAR: 1942

Welcome to part 10 of our 10 part series featuring the Saint Louis post office. For the past 9 days we have been showcasing the murals inside the main post office building on Market St. Since there are over 9 murals I’ve decided to highlight them each individually.  Today’s mural is titled “The River” and was done by Edward Millman.

This mural portrays a typical group of river men who traveled the Missouri River on flatboats when river traffic was at its height. While the cargo was being loaded you could hear their music all along the levees.

This concludes our 10 part series featuring the murals of the Saint Louis, Missouri main post office. For the past week we have featured each mural residing inside this mammoth building. In addition to the 9 large panels in the lobby there are also two smaller but very large murals at the east and west entrance of the building.  I’ve included them here as part of the final report of what is truly one of the best post offices I have visited.

Thanks for following along I hope you’ve enjoyed this series. And as always, if you have your own story about this post office I’d love to hear from you. Please comment and share below.

Saint Louis Missouri Main Post Office – Part 9

January 9, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Saint Louis (Main) MO Post Office 63155

ADDRESS: 1720 Market Street, Saint Louis, Missouri, 61355
TITLE: The Struggle for Statehood
ARTIST: Edward Millman
MEDIUM: (mural)
STATUS: The mural resides on the wall in the lobby.
YEAR: 1942

Welcome to part 9 of a 10 part series featuring the Saint Louis main post office. For the past 8 days we have been showcasing the murals inside this mammoth building. Since there are over 9 murals I’ve decided to highlight them each individually.  Today’s mural is titled “The Struggle for Statehood” and was done by Edward Millman.

The group of men at the left symbolizes the struggle for statehood. These men, John Rice Jones, David Banon, Henry Dodge  Alexander McNair and Edward Bates were among the most prominent members of the Constitutional Convention,” which resulted in the “Missouri Compromise” and led the way to Missouri statehood in 1820.

To the right of the convention group is a portrait of Joseph Charles, founder of the Missouri Gazette, the first newspaper west of the Mississippi River. In the center is a stagecoach bringing bags of mail to St. Louis in 1825, thus furnishing the Gazette with a “regular line of intelligence.” To the right of the stagecoach is a group kneeling in prayer, depicting the coming of the church into pioneer Missouri and the important role it played in development of the Missouri frontier.

Tune in tomorrow for our last series including the smaller east and west entrance murals. Thanks for following along, please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
