Clinton Illinois Post Office

March 3, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Clinton IL Post Office 61727

ADDRESS: 105 North Quincy Street, Clinton, Illinois 61727
ARTIST: Aaron Bohrod
TITLE: Clinton in Winter
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Clinton post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

In early February 2012 I decided to take another road trip. The Clinton, IL Post Office is one stop during this trip.

For my new readers, these are some of my favorite post offices. Take a look at the photos and you will see why. The artwork is amazing and the actual building has “Character”.  So you want to know why I visit post offices and take photographs? This is a prime example.

Not only does this one have art, but it is also named in honor of Gene Vance.  Clinton was the hometown of Gene and in 2006 congress named this post office in honor of him. Talk about being up to date with my post. Apparently he recently passed according the article.

I’m glad I visited during regular business hours as the mural is above the sales counter. This section of the lobby is locked and closed during non-business hours. The lady at the counter was very pleasant and allow me to photograph the mural.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago Illinois (Logan Square) Post Office

February 12, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago IL Logan Square Post Office 60647
Chicago IL Logan Square Post Office 60647

ADDRESS: 2339 North California Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60647
ARTIST: Hildreth Meiere
TITLE: The Post
MEDIUM: Metal (design)
STATUS: The Chicago Logan Square post office is still an active, operating facility. It is also known as the Roberto Clemente Station. The metal design can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the retail entrance.
YEAR: 1937

The Logan Square Illinois (Chicago) IL post office is also known as the Roberto Clemente Station. The stone logo above the front entrance of the building indicates this post office as (Logan Square). However, when you perform a search for the address, the name Roberto Clemente appears.

This happens to be the second post office building I’ve come across with this type of architecture. The Pilsen Station is very similar in design. The post office was named in honor of Roberto Clemente a famous baseball player from the 1960 & 1970 according to this USA Today Article. Another great example of art commissioned by the Section of Fine Arts.

While looking around I discovered the corner-stone indicating the postmaster and treasury. The stone was behind the Fedex box making this difficult to photograph, it reads as follows: Henry Morgenthau Jr. as the Secretary of the Treasury, James A. Farley as postmaster general. Louis A. Simon as supervising architect, Neal A. MeLick supervising engineer and John C. Bollenbacher. The date on the building reads 1935.

Update November 2015

Along with visiting the Chicago Uptown Station I was able to revisit Logan Square and a few other buildings. I figured since I had the morning free and the sun was out it was the perfect time to photograph. I was never happy with the photos of this one so it was great that I was able to re-visit and get better photographs.

Another bonus from my re-visit is the removal of the FedEx box. This was obstructing the corner stone of the building. During my first visit I had to take an awkward angle photo in order to get the corner stone. When I revisited in October since the FedEx box was gone I was able to get better photos.

As you can see from the cars and people it’s almost impossible to get an un-obstructive photo of this very busy post office. I stood around for a long time waiting for that perfect full shot of the building but it never happened. I was close, when one car pulled away another showed up. When the front was almost clean I’d have people walk in front of the building.

I’ve come to conclusion that it’s a two visit process in order to get all the photos I desire for a building. The first visit needs to occur when during business hours so I can view any artwork or artifacts that are inside the building. The second is to visit during non-business hours and hopefully get photos of the exterior of the building with-out any obstructions. At least that has been my experiences working the big congested cities.

Chicago Illinois (Daniel J. Doffyn) Post Office

January 29, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Chicago IL Post Office Daniel Doffyn Station 60618
Chicago IL Post Office Daniel Doffyn Station 60618

ADDRESS: 3750 North Kedzie Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60618
ARTIST: Peterpaul Ott
TITLE: Mercury
MEDIUM: Aluminum (relief)
STATUS: The Chicago Kedzie post office is still an active, operating facility. It is also known as the Daniel J. Doffyn Station. The relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides on the wall in the retail section of the lobby and is viewable during business hours.
YEAR: 1938

This was the first post office I visited today. Since I was headed into the city I wanted to take advantage of the sunny weather and get some good photos. The Daniel J. Doffyn post office was very busy. It was almost impossible to get a clear unobstructed photo of the front of the building. People were constantly walking in and out.

The building was named in honor of Daniel J. Doffyn a Chicago Police officer shot and killed in the line of duty according to the “Officers Down Memorial Page” dedicated to officer Doffyn.

The granite corner-stone on the front of the building was really hard to read. I wonder how much thought was put into the design of this. The granite is nice and I’m sure costly to build with, but this made it difficult to read the inscription.

Here is what I found. Henry Morgenthau Jr. Secretary of the Treasury, James A. Farley postmaster general, Louis A. Simon supervising architect, Neal A. MeLick supervising engineer, Howard L. Ghely architect. The building is dated 1936.

Update November 2015

I remember it was a super busy day when I first visited this one. I also remember being in a hurry, because I just opened the front door and peaked inside. I never actually walked all the way into the lobby. If I had done this I would have seen the art above the retail counter, but because it was a busy day with lots of people I never wanted to draw attention to myself. Ha,

Fast forward to October of this year and all that has changed. I had no problems nor was I self-conscious of what my actions. I marched right in there and started photographing the art. It was a bit challenging since it is right above the retail counter. Everyone in line was watching and observing my actions. I was able to get some good photos but the lighting was a bit tricky.

And that is how it goes sometimes during site visits and re-visits. How did I do? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
