Fairborn Ohio Post Office

March 8, 2014 By David W. Gates Jr.

Fairborn OH Post Office 45324
Fairborn OH Post Office 45324

ADDRESS: 67 West Hebble Avenue, Fairborn, Ohio, 45324
ARTIST: Henry Simon
TITLE: Wright Brothers in Ohio
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The former Fairborn post office is no longer an active, operating postal facility. It is now home to the local public library. The mural was moved here to the newer post office building It is located on a wall in the main lobby.
YEAR: 1941

To be honest I wasn’t quite expecting to see the mural in this building. To my surprise however, the mural is housed here in the newer post office. Someone or somebody took the time to plan for the installation. As you can see from the images below, the mural is set into the wall and protected by glass. I’m delighted it has been protected and cared for.

However, this made my job of photographing it very difficult. Every angle I tried ended with reflections from the overhead lights reflecting off the glass. I ended up taking a bunch of photographs. I never achieved a reflection-free full photo of this one. Maybe someday, I’ll be able to get a better photograph, maybe when they remodel or take it down for restoration or cleaning. But until that happens, I hope you enjoy the photographs I did get.

What do you know about the circumstances surrounding the movement of this mural? Where you responsible for the installation and protection of it? I’d love to hear your comments below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Former Fairborn Ohio Post Office

YEAR: 1941

My trip in November of 2013 included finding the former Fairborn Ohio Post Office. At the time I wasn’t sure where it was located but eventually I did find the building. As it turns out the former Fairborn post office has been converted to the local library, a good thing in my mind. I would rather find the building re-used for the public rather than privately owned. So the fact that it was converted to a library was a refreshing site to me.

I had some extra time on this visit so I figured I’d head inside and do a little research. I found a few books with some local history from the area. I decided having a few of the post offices images would be a great addition to this article.  A big thanks to the staff of the Fairborn Public Library for help a visitor from out of state. Much appreciated.

October 2022 Update

During a recent road trip, I stop in Fairborn to visit the former post offie. It has been repurposed as the local library for a number of years. Not to fond of the painted books on the side of the building, but I guess there could be worse things you do with the building. I was also lucky to find some historical photos in the library when the town was called Osborne.

Yes, you are correct, the original post office was known as the Osborne, Ohio post office.

Thank you,

David W. Gates Jr.
