Illinois Post Office Mural Artists

April 12, 2022 By David W. Gates Jr.

The following is a list of all the artists that created murals in Illinois post offices during the New Deal. As I’ve been doing my research I felt it might be helpful for others so I decided to write-up an article with my findings.

If you ever visit the National Archives in Washington DC, then you may notice this comes in handy. Some of the records and files are organized by state. Other records are organized by the name of the artists.

I found it useful to have a listing of both. So here it is.

Moline Illinois Post Office

January 9, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Moline IL Post Office 61265
Moline IL Post Office 61265

ADDRESS: 514 17th Street, Moline, Illinois, 61265
ARTIST: Edward Millman
TITLE: Ploughshare Manufacturing
MEDIUM: Egg tempera (mural)
STATUS: The Moline post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be seen by interested members of the public. It resides in the main lobby on the wall above the entrance.
YEAR:1937

Plough making must have been a booming business in Moline back in the 30’s. I’ve never thought about making plough’s but there you go.

The mural in this one was difficult to photograph because it is so high up on wall. I tried several times to get  close up of the signature right above the clock. Every time I tried the photo came out blurry. It just would not focus for some reason. Eventually I got one or two that seem to be satisfactory. Sometimes that’s how it goes.

How about that pay phone booth? At least that’s what it looks like to me. Can anyone confirm is this was indeed a payphone booth?

This was a visit back in June of 2015. I’m still working through my backlog of photos.

What do you like about this mural? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Saint Louis Missouri Main Post Office – Part 10

January 10, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Saint Louis Missouri Main Post Office 63155 In Honor
Saint Louis Missouri Main Post Office 63155 In Honor

ADDRESS: 1720 Market Street, Saint Louis, Missouri, 61355
TITLE: The River
ARTIST: Edward Millman
MEDIUM: (mural)
STATUS: The mural resides on the wall in the lobby.
YEAR: 1942

Welcome to part 10 of our 10 part series featuring the Saint Louis post office. For the past 9 days we have been showcasing the murals inside the main post office building on Market St. Since there are over 9 murals I’ve decided to highlight them each individually.  Today’s mural is titled “The River” and was done by Edward Millman.

This mural portrays a typical group of river men who traveled the Missouri River on flatboats when river traffic was at its height. While the cargo was being loaded you could hear their music all along the levees.

This concludes our 10 part series featuring the murals of the Saint Louis, Missouri main post office. For the past week we have featured each mural residing inside this mammoth building. In addition to the 9 large panels in the lobby there are also two smaller but very large murals at the east and west entrance of the building.  I’ve included them here as part of the final report of what is truly one of the best post offices I have visited.

Thanks for following along I hope you’ve enjoyed this series. And as always, if you have your own story about this post office I’d love to hear from you. Please comment and share below.
