Lewisburg Tennessee Post Office

July 21, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Lewisburg TN Post Office 37091
Lewisburg TN Post Office 37091

ADDRESS: 557 E. Commerce St., Lewisburg, Tennessee, 37091
ARTIST: John H. R. Pickett
TITLE: Coming Round the Mountain
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The mural is on display in the lobby and is accessible to members of the public.
YEAR: 1938

Todays featured post office is from Lewisburg Tennessee. Pictured above is the newer post office building constructed in the late 1980’s. The mural was moved from the old post office to this building. Can anyone confirm the location of the original post office building? Tomorrow featured post office is what I believe to be the old location but I have not been able to confirm this. Would you happen to know? Do you know the address? Have any pictures when it was a post office?

The mural is very large is size, so I decided to get a bunch of close up photos so you can all see and appreciate the detail of this great mural. I had a nice visit and enjoyed seeing this one.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Manchester Tennessee Post Office

July 20, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Manchester TN Post Office 37355
Manchester TN Post Office 37355

ADDRESS: 1601 Hillsboro Blvd., Manchester, Tennessee, 37355
ARTIST: Minna Citron
TITLE: Swapping Day
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The mural is on display behind the retail counter. It is only viewable during business hours.
YEAR: 1942

Yesterday I featured the Former Manchester Tennessee Post Office. Which is located in the downtown area of Manchester. Today I feature the newer building. Luckily the mural that once hung in the former building was moved to the new building. This makes me happy.

So many questions about this one, the circumstances surrounding the move etc. Finding all the details and some history is made more difficult since each town potentially has its own historical societies. The only historical society I found was for Coffee County.

If you look at the detail of this mural you can see the Former Manchester Post Office in the background of the painting. I though this was a really cool feature of the mural. It also provided me a rough idea of what to look for when I went driving around the down town area looking for the former building.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Shelbyville Tennessee Post Office

July 18, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Shelbyville TN Post Office 37160
Shelbyville TN Post Office 37160

ADDRESS: 600 N. Main St., Shelbyville, Tennessee 37160

This one has a lot of old artifacts. I was surprised to find so much. But its times like this that I was grateful, I visited during normal business hours and that the items were on display. Oh and don’t forget about the dedication plaque hidden behind the evergreen bushes in front of the building. A lucky find, I’m glad I checked.

Some interesting artifacts, I found was an old postal carriers hat, old framed photographs of the old building and old letters and awards. Some nice items I have to say. I’d like to say thank you to the person or people who took the time to make sure these were put o display for the public. What a real treat. I often ask myself how many locals realize what a neat thing it is to have a post office with so much history and charm? Not everyone is as luck as the residents of Shelbyville. From Chicago, Thank you.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
