Ridgefield Park New Jersey Post Office

July 10, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Ridgefield Park New Jersey Post Office 07660
Ridgefield Park New Jersey Post Office 07660

ADDRESS: 155 Main St., Ridgefield Park, New Jersey 07660
ARTIST: Thomas Donnelly
TITLE: Washington Bridge
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Ridgefield Park post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides on a wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1935

Usually, when cars are parked out front, I can gage how long I’ll need to wait before I can get a good photograph.

That was not the case when I arrived at the Ridgefield Park post office. Out in front was a stalled car with two cars and their hoods open.

I knew this wasn’t going to be a quick in and out for pictures. So I immediately headed inside to start photographing the mural. This turned out to be a great strategy. I talked to the clerk for a little bit, while the customers with car trouble worked on getting their car started.

I could have left with just the pictures taken from the side, but I really wanted the straight on photo so I waited.

The lighting was perfect and I knew if I came back in the evening I would have had a dark front to the building or worse I have had to return in the morning and also faced darker images. The time of day was perfect for lighting so I waited.

Apparently, someone kind stranger was also helping this lady out, which was nice to see. She tried to hand him some cash when he was done, but he refused to take it.

There are still nice people out there. It was odd to be in the right place at the right time to see this kind jester. It made me smile and is another reason I like to slow down and be more observant in this line of work.

Ridgewood New Jersey Post Office

July 7, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Ridgewood NJ Post Office 07450
Ridgewood NJ Post Office 07450

ADDRESS: 143 E. Ridgewood Ave., Ridgewood, New Jersey 07450
ARTIST: Romuald Kraus
TITLE: Male and Female Figures
MEDIUM: Metal (reliefs) 2 reliefs
STATUS: The Ridgewood post office is still an active, operating facility, and the reliefs can be viewed by interested members of the public. They resided in the lobby on the wall above the retail counter.
YEAR: 1937

I wasn’t quite prepared for such a large lobby. There just seems to be a lot of space inside, which is definitely different than most I’ve visited.

Most of the buildings are smaller more intimate places, but from the outside, I guess I would not have expected the ceiling height to be so open.

Bonus that we also have a statue of the postal carrier in the front lawn of the building. I’ve seen people take their pictures with this status and I’m not different. I walked right to get a selfie with the postal carrier.

Both reliefs in the lobby are high up and difficult to see. Even using the tripod it was difficult to bring the art closer. I think I did  pretty good job, but let me know if you feel different in the comments below.

Pitman New Jersey Post Office

July 6, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Pitman New Jersey Post Office 08071
Pitman New Jersey Post Office 08071

ADDRESS: 55 N. Broadway, Pitman, New Jersey 08071
ARTIST: Nathaniel Choate
TITLE: The Four Winds
MEDIUM: Plaster (relief)
STATUS: The Pitman post office is still an active, operating facility, and the relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1935

My apologies to the man who was trying to park in front of the building? I was standing right next to the curb and he was trying to back into a parking space. He honked, but when I didn’t move, he keep honking, until eventually I moved.

There was plenty of room to park, and I really wasn’t in the way. But since his honking didn’t seem to stop, I moved to accommodate his desire for me to get out of the way.

When he got out of the car he asked if I was one of those YouTuber’s or social media people, with a not so enthusiastic tone in his voice. He was clearly agitated that I was in his way. So sorry sir, but you could have kept backing up. I really wasn’t in your way.

Such is life photographing post offices.
