Local Author from Crystal Lake Named Finalist in Midwest Book Awards
(TENNESSEE POST OFFICE MURALS) by (DAVID W. GATES JR.) up for gold in NON FICTION – HISTORY / REGIONAL

MAY 1, 2022, CRYSTAL LAKE, ILLINOIS – TENNESSEE POST OFFICE MURALS (Post Office Fans, 2021) has been selected as a finalist in the history / regional category of the Midwest Book Awards, a long-running regional awards program first established in 1989.

Gates’s book explores (the history of twenty-eight murals installed in post offices during the Great Depression, the book has been well received by historical societies, libraries and New Deal enthusiast nation-wide, Gates’s sleuthing through the original correspondence between the artist and the government provides the reader a rich account of this fascinating moment in American history).

Finalists for the 32nd annual Midwest Book Awards include nearly one hundred titles from fifty- one independent publishers from a 12-state region, competing for gold medals in 35 fiction and non-fiction categories.

Winners will be announced during a YouTube premiere on June 25 at 7pm central. An in-person watch party and book sale will be held starting at 5pm at ModernWell in Minneapolis, a co- working space located at 2909 S Wayzata Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55405. His third post office mural guidebook!

[Crystal Lake, IL]—[May 12, 2021]

[Illinois Post Office Mural Guidebook] by [David W. Gates Jr.] was recently published by Post Office Fans. [Post Office Mural Guidebooks] Gates’s latest guidebook is an account of all the post offices in Illinois that have artwork installed during the Great Depression of the 1930s. While the book does not show images of the artwork, Gates’s guidebook does provides the reader with vital statistics such as the location and status of the art in the state of Illinois.

Previous guidebooks by Gates include, Wisconsin and Tennessee.

I couldn’t be happier, Illinois Post Office Mural Guidebook has been published by Post Office Fans. I’ve been so focused on other states, its nice to have my home state of Illinois out there now. This is also my largest guidebook to date so it took a little extra time to complete.

Winners announced June 27 during regional online watch party with book prizes

[CRYSTAL LAKE, IL]—[MAY 1, 2020]

[WISCONSIN POST OFFICE MURALS] by [DAVID W. GATES JR.] was named a finalist in the [HISTORY – REGIONAL] category of the 30th annual Midwest Book Awards. The awards program, which is organized by the Midwest Independent Publishers Association, recognizes quality in independent publishing in the Midwest.

The 30th annual Midwest Book Awards was open to books published and copyrighted in 2019 in MiPA’s 12-state Midwestern region: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. 

This year’s competition garnered 221 entries in 31 categories, which were judged by a panel of 99 librarians and booksellers from every state in MiPA’s 12-state Midwestern region.

Typically an awards gala is held every year in Minneapolis to announce the winners, but this year, due to travel and shelter-in-place restrictions from Covid-19, winners will be announced during a free, online watch party on Facebook set for June 27 at 7pm CDT, with book prizes for attendees and a special segment by independent booksellers throughout the Midwest on how to support them at this time.

“Although we were disappointed to cancel our gala this year, we are excited for the potential to attract a larger audience who can help make this a truly regional event that celebrates Midwestern publishing,” said Jennifer Baum, chair of the Midwest Book Awards.
