A total of forty-five artist created murals in forty-seven New Jersey Post Office buildings during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Four of the artist received multiple commissions as noted below. The artist and their awarded sites as listed below.

We have found having a list such as this is convenient when performing research at the National Archives Records and Administration. Any researcher will reveal, that finding information is part of the fun, somethings what you are looking for is catalogued by the artist name. Other times the research materials you need may be cataloged by the city or town, and so on.

Having a list to refer to is helpful on your journey of discovering these wonderful treasures in our nations post offices.

Kearny New Jersey Post Office

June 1, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Kearny New Jersey Post Office 07032
Kearny New Jersey Post Office 07032

ADDRESS: 64 Midland Ave., Kearny, New Jersey 07032
ARTIST: Albert Kotin
TITLE: The City and The Marsh
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (murals) 2 panels
STATUS: The Kearny post office is still an active, operating facility, and the murals can be viewed by interested members of the public. Formally known as Arlington, the post office took on the Kearny name in the 1950s. One mural resides in the main lobby, and the other one resides in the retail section of the lobby.
YEAR: 1935

My first attempt to see this one failed as I arrived after hours and the lobby was closed. I came back the next day to photograph the murals.

I love the look of this building, and was quite impressed with the interior and lobby. One disappointment was the lights obstructing the murals in both locations.

In addition, the postal service placed a large TV monitor in front of the mural in the retail section of the lobby. Thus restricting the entire view of the work. A disappointment indeed but I did what I could to get the images you see below.

The entire arrangement in the retail section of the lobby made it difficult to get up close, and take the detail photographs that I like. On the left side there were was the writing desk and retail displays. The customers were also standing in line on the right side, making it difficult to get up close to the mural. Since this was a busy station, I decided not to stick around. I took the pictures I could and was on my way.

Ada Ohio Post Office

February 9, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Ada OH Post Office 45810
Ada OH Post Office 45810

ADDRESS: 131 South Main Street, Ada, Ohio 45810
ARTIST: Albert Kotin
TITLE: Country Dance
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Ada post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. The mural resides in the lobby on a wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1940

The Ada, Ohio Post Office visit is another example of discovery. When I asked at the front desk about the mural the postal employee immediately went to get the postmaster. We chatted for a few minutes about the mural and building.

She also informed me of a local person who wrote an article about Ada that included some information about the old Post Office. This is valuable information and something I hope with a little more time would be able to investigate further in the future.

Do you know more about this one?

Thanks for stopping by
