HAPPY 4th of July Everyone!!!

I hope everyone is enjoying their day. I wanted to thank everyone for following and being fans of the United States Post Office. Of course I need to put my two cents in and hope the sell off and plundering of our National Post Office buildings slows or stops. Today we celebrate our freedom, even as one of our nations institutions continues to struggle. Let’s hope the powers that be will take time to reflect on this situation and take action to protect our post office buildings.

Starting today in honor of our Nations Celebration, I’m posting 4 in a row. Yes, you read that right, Four Tennessee post offices that were built under the Roosevelt administration. Just my small way of celebrating our independence. I hope you enjoy the next few days.

July 4th Lenoir City Tennessee

July 5th Sweetwater Tennessee

July 6th Rockwood Tennessee

July 7th Dayton Tennessee

You know you hit the jackpot when you leave a post office having taken 40 photographs. But just check out that mural! How cool is that? But wait there’s more, check out the old photographs in lobby and news clippings. What a treat that someone took the time to save these wonderful treaures and artifacts.

Were you a part of preserving the news clippings displayed here? Are there other historical stuff somewhere in a local library that I don’t know about? Will you be the first to enlighten me?

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Chilton Wisconsin Post Office

December 15, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Chilton WI Post Office 53014
Chilton WI Post Office 53014

ADDRESS : 57 E. Main St. Chilton, Wisconsin 53014
ARTIST: Charles W. Thwaites
TITLE: Threshing Barley
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Chilton Post Office is active to this day, and the mural is accessible to members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1940

Chilton Wisconsin was another one of those visits that makes this hobby so rewarding. Chilton has a beautiful mural and, in addition to viewing this great art, I was also able to meet the Chilton postmaster. I’m really excited when I find a postmaster who is interested in not only in their work but also the historic building they work in. Chilton is a perfect example.

When I approached the front counter the lady at the desk asked me to wait and that the postmaster had some more information about the mural. It turns out the artist had also published a book and the postmaster had a copy that was signed by the artists.

Reflecting back on this experience, I’m learning that it really pays to inquire about the Mural and buildings of the post offices I visit. As it turns out I’m also able to share this with all of you. What are your thoughts on this wonderful post office and mural? Have you visited this one?

Thanks for stopping by

Hamilton Illinois Post Office

February 4, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Hamilton IL PO 62341
Hamilton IL PO 62341

ADDRESS: 1160 Broadway Street, Hamilton, Illinois, 62341
ARTIST: Edmund D. Lewandowski
TITLE: On The River
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Hamilton post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1941

January 10, 2012

Hamilton was my goal for this road trip. My research reveled that it had an interesting mural. This fact also brought to my attention, that it most likely is an older post office. So with this knowledge in hand, a tank full of gas, two ham sandwiches, I set out and drove to Hamilton Illinois.

I was not disappointed when I first spotted the building. The design and look of the building immediately gave away its age. I took pictures of the exterior and the corner-stone at the lower left corner then headed inside.

The mural is beautiful and even more impressive in person. The artist signed the mural on the lower left corner of the piece. Viewing these works of art is a delight and the reason I created this website.

Thanks for visiting.
