Stockton Illinois Post Office

February 8, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Stockton IL PO 61085
Stockton IL Post Office 61085

ADDRESS: 201 W. Railroad Ave., Stockton, Illinois 61085

The Stockton post office is another one we visited during our road trip to Galena, IL. Stockton is a perfect example of the contrast between new and old post offices buildings. This one is relatively newer building and one of my least favorite style building. I get that progress and growth are natural occurrences, but I prefer the older buildings.

Once again we were in the car driving along route 20 and headed home from the Galena Post Office. What is funny is that the town of Stockton has a nice main street with older buildings. Whenever I’m in an older town surrounded by older buildings I get excited thinking the post office is going to be another old gem.

Not the case in Stockton, IL. The post office was dedicated in 1998 while William Clinton was president and Marvin Runyon was postmaster general.

It’s kinda funny once you start visiting lots of post offices you can spot the unique ones and when you see a newer one it’s almost like you get disappointed. I remember my girlfriend’s reaction when we spotted the newer building. We both just let out a sigh, relieved we found it, but disappointed it was a newer building. I’m grateful to have visited.

As I compile this post I also realized I forgot to take a photo of the building itself. Since we were kinda in a hurry driving through town we ended up just talking one with me in the front. Funny how that happens.

I agree with you that by and large my least favorite postal facilities to photograph are those that embody the least amount of local character. Invariably those are the newest ones, whereupon the connection to the place is relegated to white lettering on a glass door or on a small blue sign. Give me a historic WPA office, or one in the side of a local’s house, any day!

That said, a post office is still a post office, and I certainly don’t discriminate!
