Staunton Virginia Post Office – Guest

April 2, 2022 By Roger

Staunton VA
Staunton VA

ADDRESS: 123 W. Frederick Street, Staunton, VA 24401
ARTIST: Florence Bessom
TITLE: The McCormick Reaper
MEDIUM: Terra-cotta (relief)
STATUS: The Staunton post office is still an active post office; relief hangs on wall in very small lobby. A plaque on the wall states that the relief was discovered in 2003 while the building was being renovated. It measures approximately 3’ x 7.5’. Commissioned by the Treasury Department Section of Paintings and Sculptures.
YEAR: 1935

Recently was in Staunton, Virginia and came across this great looking New Deal Post Office Building. Part of the building (center 1st Floor) still serves as a small, downtown Post Office; ( the Main “modern” Post Office is now on the outskirts of town); and there are two, private businesses on either side of the station.

Best Regards, Roger
