Reedsburg Wisconsin Post Office

September 28, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Reedsburg WI Post Office 53959
Reedsburg WI Post Office 53959

ADDRESS: 215 N. Walnut Reedsburg, Wisconsin 53959
ARTIST:  Richard Jansen
TITLE: Dairy Farming
MEDIUM: Mural
STATUS: The Reedsburg post office is still active, and the mural is view- able by the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR 1940

Today’s featured post office is Reedsburg Wisconsin. What a colorful mural, I really like this one. I must have waited about an hour for one single car to move in front of this building. But I drove all this way, and wasn’t planning on going home empty-handed. I waited and finally the front of the building opened up and I was able to get this un-obstructed view and photo of the Historic Reedsburg Wisconsin Post Office.

The colors of this mural really stood out to me. The great big red barn is pretty cool looking. What is your favorite part of this mural? Anything you’d like to share?

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Viroqua Wisconsin Post Office

September 22, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Viroqua WI Post Office 54665
Viroqua WI Post Office 54665

ADDRESS: 119 E. Jefferson St. Viroqua, Wisconsin 54665
ARTIST: Forrest Flower
TITLE: War Party
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Viroqua Post Office is still active and the mural viewable. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1942

Today’s featured post office is Viroqua Wisconsin. And what a beauty and kind of disturbing one at the same time. Read on for more.

My first though was how large the painting is. I’m a bad judge of dimensions but the mural stretches all the way to the ceiling and down both sides of the postmasters office door. My second though was how violent the subject appears. The colors are also dark adding to the overall feeling of this mural.

One thing I wasn’t prepared for was all the photographs of the past postmasters on the wall. This was an added treat and I photographed each photograph. I though it might be nice to have this here.

I took a lot of pictures since I ended up visiting this one twice, two weekends back to back in order to get inside the building. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Chippewa Falls Wisconsin Post Office

September 1, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Chippewa Falls WI Post Office 54729
Chippewa Falls WI Post Office 54729

ADDRESS: 315 N. Bridge St., Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin 54729

Another historic building from Chippewa Falls. I love the design, the plaque in front of the building gives a nice little historic description of this great post office.

“This Federal Post Office Building was built-in 1910 at a cost of $90,000. The property was purchased from the Thornton estate for $10,000. The Neo-Classical design style was often used by governmental architects of the Treasury Department during the period of 1895 to 1930.

regular mail service and the first post office was established at Chippewa Falls in 1851. Hiram S Allen received a commission as the first postmaster and received what little mail there was at the Company Store. Since postage stamps were not in use yet, the recipient of a letter was required to pay for its carriage and delivery before he received it. The usual charge was twenty-five cents.

By the year 1855 mail arrived by Pony Express and two years later a bi-weekly stage line  was established between Chippewa Falls and Wabasha, from where the mail arrived up the Mississippi River by river boats. Free delivery of mail was  started in 1888 when five uniformed carriers were approved by the Post Office Department in Washington D.C for the City of Chippewa Falls.”

The strange thing is I never found a corner-stone. I even dug around the bushes looking for one. I wonder what people must think when they see a guy rummaging around the bushes in front of a government building. I mean not harm, really, I’m just interested in the building and looking for a corner-stone.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
