Former Port Washington Wisconsin Post Office

October 24, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Former Port Washington WI Post Office
Former Port Washington WI Post Office

I need you help with this one. When I was visiting in September of 2013 we were walking around town. I didn’t even known about this one. In fact It was my fiancé who pointed it out to me.

Sine the existing post office was building in the late 1930’s this one has to be older than 1938 or so. What else can you tell me about this one? It appears to part of the bank now, but because it was a weekend, I don’t remember it being open.

Here is what I’m looking for?

  • When was this one built or dedicated?
  • What was the old or existing address?
  • When did it close and move to the new building?
  • Who was the postmaster?
  • Any old photographs or newspaper articles about it.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Former Manchester Tennessee Post Office

July 19, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Former Manchester TN Post Office 37355
Former Manchester TN Post Office 37355

ADDRESS: 200 N. Spring St. Manchester, Tennessee, 37355
ARTIST: Minna Citron
TITLE: Swapping Day
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The former Manchester post office is no longer an active facility. The mural was moved to the newer post office. It is on display behind the retail counter and is only viewable during business hours.
YEAR: 1942

For mural information please see our article on the current Manchester, Tennessee Post Office.

I’m disappointed to see this one in such a neglected state, but at lease the building is still standing. This also brings me to another goal of this blog. To highlight and document our disappearing post offices. This one is a classic example.

Once I got home and started to search for some other bits of information, I found out how difficult it was in finding quality historical data. This is where you can help. If you know when it was sold. What it’s being used for now, or any other interesting information I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks

David W. Gates Jr.
