Former Monclova Ohio Post Office

Looking for the newer Monclova Post Office

My very first visit to this post office was in December 2011.

Today my girlfriends dad told me about the old (Original) Monclova post office. See this information you only get by mingling with the locals. I had no idea this one existed. Since it is no longer an active post office it does not show up on the USPS website.

As we were driving to breakfast he stopped so I could take a picture. It was a cloudy and overcast day. Since I only had the camera on my phone, I quickly took a few pictures. It was raining and I didn’t want to get it wet. Thanks for stopping and sharing this great post office with me Al.

The post office sits in the middle of town as a historic site. I wish it would have been open to see the inside. I peaked through the window and was excited to see the uniqueness of this classic post office. Very cool.

Thanks for stopping by,

David W. Gates Jr.

Former Alden Illinois Post Office

Alden Illinois Post Office

Today I bring you the Alden IL Post Office. It’s actually a picture of a picture.  The actual Alden Post Office no longer exist.  I found this picture hanging in an antique store. My girlfriend and I were out for the day and decided to stop in this store and have a look around. I was so intrigued by the photograph I ended up talking to the store owner for a while about it.

When I asked if there was a new post office to replace this one, I was told that Alden no longer has a post office. The owner of the store mentioned Harvard, and Hebron were the closest post offices.

I’m adding this to the list of post office to investigate further. Unless anyone out there has more history or stories about the Alden Post Office.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Former Yuma Arizona Post Office

February 17, 2012 By David W. Gates Jr.

Former Yuma AZ Post Office 85364
Former Yuma AZ Post Office 85634

ADDRESS: 370 Main Street, Yuma, Arizona 85364

So I’m looking through my older photos and came across this one. It was an accident that I found it at the time. For some reason I seem to remember asking the locals were the post office was located. I seem to remember  someone pointed out that this building was once the Yuma post office. We eventually found the newer Yuma Post Office that I’m guessing was the replacement for this building.

The only indication or evidence to support this is the engraved “United States Post Office” under the Gowan Company name at the top of building. If you look closely you can see the older post office letters.

Reflecting on this now I’m disappointed the letters were filled in. I certainly understand a company wanting to place their own name on a building. I’m just biased and think that if the name “United States Post Office” is already part of the facade then why not just keep it?

Contrast this to the Former post office in Dixon, where they keep the letters. Visit my article about the former Dixon, Illinois Post Office.

At the time I was not really interested in the history or artifacts of the some of my earlier photos. So I’m not sure what other history remains. If anyone else out there has more information regarding this building I’d love to hear from you. Please comment below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
