Former Crossville Tennessee Post Office

June 24, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 2 South Main St., Crossville, Tennessee 38555
ARTIST: Marion Greenwood
TITLE: The Partnership of Man and Nature
ARTIST: Marion Greenwood
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The mural was removed from this building and moved over to thew newer post office on Old Jamestown Hwy. It resides in the lobby of current post office building.
YEAR: 1940

For mural information please see our article on the current Crossville, Tennessee Post Office.

With years of practice or just knowing what to look for its pretty easy to spot the old post offices. The former Crossville post office has been nicely maintained an re-purposed as a memorial and museum. Very nice touches and definitely nice to see the old building preserved and well maintained. The building is a memorial to Milo Lemert a World War 1 Hero and was dedicated in 1991.

Yesterday, I highlighted the newer building which replaced this one. The mural that used to reside here is now in the newer post office building, “New” being a slightly loose word as the replacement post office was built sometime in the 1980’s.

It was early when I arrived here and town was just coming to life. To the man I met across the street. It was nice to meet you. I don’t remember your name but I do remember you had a large camera and were taking pictures for the historical society. We chatted for a few minutes. I gave you my business card and you laughed. That made me happy, I hope your photos turned out well that day. All told, I believe I visited and documented about 60 post offices while visiting Tennessee.

Thanks stopping by,

David W. Gates Jr.

oh Happy Farther’s day Dad!!!

So my time in Tennessee brought me to the old post office and court-house. The good news is the building is still being used as a court-house. The not so good news is that it is no longer a post office. I’m happy to see the engraved letters “post office and court-house” above the entrance to the building.

Howard Hull’s book “Tennessee Post Office Murals” list the Columbia Post Office as having a mural. Since the building is not open to the public I’m unable to confirm if the mural still exist. The Columbia chapter in Hull’s book displays pictures of the mural.

So now I’m going to ask for some help. Does this mural still exist in this building? Is there anyone reading know if the mural has been moved or restored? The front doors were locked during a week day with not security folks around to ask.

Any help in confirming this or shedding more light on this would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE January 2015

In December 2014, I was able to schedule and gain access to this building. I also managed to get a bunch of photographs of the mural. Since the lobby was undergoing light bulb changes most ceiling lights were out or missing.  This made it difficult to get go photographs. I can now check this one off my list. Yes, this mural is in great shape and in excellent condition.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Former Villa Park Illinois Post Office

May 31, 2013 By David W. Gates Jr.

Villa Park IL Post Office 60181

ADDRESS: 321 E. Kenilworth Ave., Villa Park, Illinois 60181

Another historic building for sale. I never come across any sources, as this building ever having artwork, but it still pains me to see these wonderful old buildings for sale. I visited in January of this year hoping to get it photographed before it potentially disappears for good. If only I could get inside to see if the lobby has anything interesting.

Can anyone help me out? Is there stuff inside to see? I really just curious and would like to see it since its vacant anyway.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
