Saint Louis Missouri University City Branch Post Office – Guest

University City MO PO
University City MO PO

ADDRESS: 561 Kingsland Ave, St. Louis, MO 63130
ARTIST: Trew Hocker
TITLE: The Louisiana Purchase Exposition
MEDIUM: Fresco (mural)
STATUS: The Saint Louis Missouri University City Branch post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1940

A well maintained classic 1937 FDR/depression era building.  The painted mural is of a pastoral scene at the 1904 STL World’s Fair; no indication as to who artist is, and postal clerk said no one ever asked.  She didn’t know it was a worlds fair rendition.  Wish the postmaster would move the box stand away from the mural.

Cooperstown New York Post Office – Guest

September 16, 2023 By FrankR

Cooperstown NY copy
Cooperstown NY copy

ADDRESS: 40 Main St, Cooperstown, NY 13326
ARTIST: Victor Salvatore
TITLE: James Fenimore Cooper, Natty Bumppo, Chief Chingachgook
MEDIUM: Bronze (sculpture)
STATUS: The Cooperstown post office is still an active, operating facility, and the sculpture can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1935

Its PO is a well maintained throwback, Postmaster is a kindly keeper and unlike many of them, proud of his facility and operation. All of his stamp types for sale are displayed in a wooden and glass case, appearance inside and out like the day it was built. Local doings on an announcement board, private mailboxes as brassy and shiny as the day they were installed, flag proudly drifting in the breeze, town folks gathered out front discussing the state of NY politics and one guy quite noticeably upset with the antics and foibles of our current president. I expected Jimmy Stewart to be seen chasing Donna Reed past the library!

The art hung in lobby is a three dimensional bronze of James Fenimore Cooper. Sorry for photo quality, lights are not the best. Cornerstone partially obscured by the placement later of a handicapped ramp – we’ve seen that before, right? Directly across the street from the venerable Baseball HOF. Cooperstown must have a town code – allpage1image49868784

Cooperstown must have a town code – all homes must be kept up to standards, streets and curbs are spotless – no litter anywhere. This place is like a trip to 1940 America. Sorry, not a cat in sight. Hope these additions to your post office library are useful. Always looking forward to your weekly blasts!

Best,

Frank
