Nashville Illinois Post Office

December 19, 2015 By David W. Gates Jr.

Nashville IL Post Office 62263
Nashville IL Post Office 62263

ADDRESS: 181 South Kaskaskia Street, Nashville, Illinois, 62263
ARTIST: Zoltan Sepeshy
TITLE: Barnyard
MEDIUM: Tempera (mural)
STATUS: The Nashville post office is still an active, operating, facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It mural resides in the lobby on the wall above the post office boxes.
YEAR: 1942

I love the colors of this mural. They are bright and cheerful. I also feel like the rooster takes the show as the main subject of the piece. The viewer can see how he is perched on top of the plow and staring down at the other farm animals. I think this rooster had a lot to say at the time. Or maybe he just needed to vent. Anyway.

I also like how the mural is on the back wall. When you enter the building the visitor has a great view just by walking through the doors. Most art is on either side of the vestibule and not visible until you are entirely inside the lobby.

What are you thoughts on this mural? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Staunton Illinois Post Office

Staunton IL Post Office 62088

ADDRESS: 113 South Edwardsville Street, Staunton, Illinois, 62088
ARTIST: Ralf Christian Hendricksen
TITLE: Going to Work
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
Status:The Staunton post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1941

As mentioned in a previous article. My trip in May of 2015 I visited a few buildings during non-business hours. Staunton was one stop and the doors were closed. Darn! I wasn’t able to view or photograph the mural. Saving this one for another day. Until then please enjoy the following exterior photos.

Another building with a covered up corner-stone. I talk about my disappointment in the installation of the ramps on my Post Office Corner Stone page.

Note to self, the building is closed on Sunday’s. Check for hours on Saturday and plan accordingly.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

10/26/2020 UPDATE

Another stop during my Saturday road trip was Staunton, Illinois. The last time I visited the lobby was closed and I was not able to photograph the mural. Saturday October 24, 2020 I had the opportunity. What a great mural and lobby. Always pains me to see the covered up cornerstone. I’m including the image of me wearing my mask as a reminder of this time in history when we were dealing with a global pandemic.

Former Melrose Park Illinois Post Office

November 26, 2015 By David W. Gates Jr.

Former Melrose Park IL Post Office 60160
Former Melrose Park IL Post Office 60160

ADDRESS: 801 North Broadway, Melrose Park, Illinois, 60160
ARTIST: Edwin Boyd Johnson
TITLE: Air Mail
MEDIUM: Fresco (mural)
STATUS: The Melrose Park post office closed in the 1960’s. The mural was hidden by a drop ceiling for years. The public library purchased and remodeled the building considerably. The mural was also restored and now resides in the adult services section for all to enjoy.
YEAR: 1937

Another beautiful restored mural. I had a hard time looking for this one. At first I was looking for the old building. What I’ve learned over the years is they tend to be the boxy style buildings. So I was a bit baffled when I came upon the Melrose Park library. This one has large green awnings and looked nothing like your typical New Deal building.

I needed confirmation this was indeed the original post office. So I send an email to the library inquiring about the mural and the building. Sure enough I received a response that indeed this was the original location of the building and that mural was indeed located here.

Yes, you are correct on both counts. I am attaching a document which outlines the story of the Fresco and its rediscovery and renovation.

After careful examination of the building you can see the old brick vs the new brick on the side of building. Which begs me to wonder, what happened to the corner-stone? Does it still exist behind the new addition or was it somehow destroyed as part of the remodel?

I’d also love to see original photos of the building when it was still a post office. The staff didn’t seem to know any other history other than it was the original post office.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
