Chester Illinois Post Office

January 30, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Chester IL Post Office 62233
Chester IL Post Office 62233

ADDRESS: 1321 Swanwick Street, Chester, Illinois 62233
ARTIST: Fay Elizabeth Davis
TITLE: Loading the Packet
MEDIUM: Tempera (mural)
STATUS: The Chester post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1940

Sometimes when I’m in the zone I often think about other things. It’s about this time that I just become a machine and go through the motions during my visits. Often times I find myself on autopilot not thinking of the task at hand.

While I’m writing up this article, I have little recollection of my visit in Chester. I’m digging in the back of my mind to come up with what this visit was like or how it felt. I’m drawing a blank and the only explanation I can come up with is that I must have been so absorbed in my work.

It also appears I liked the lobby as I took several more photos that usual of the Chester building. What do you think of this mural? I’m guessing the Packet was the name of the boat? Can anyone confirm of dispute this?

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 211 North Springfield Street, Virden, Illinois 62690
ARTIST: James Daugherty
TITLE: Illinois Pastoral
MEDIUM: Tempera (mural)
STATUS: The Virden post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

If I had to provide one word to describe this mural I’d say “wavy”. If I had to use another word I’d say “colorful”. I think those are the two best descriptions of this mural. I also like that it takes up the entire wall. I spent a nice bit of time in Virden. There was a lot going on in this mural and I took a bunch of detail pictures.

What is your one word to describe this mural? What is your favorite piece of it or part of it? Did you know the artists? Please comment and share below.

Madison Illinois Post Office

January 16, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Madison IL Post Office 62060
Madison IL Post Office 62060

ADDRESS: 549 Madison Avenue, Madison, Illinois, 62060
ARTIST: A. Raymond Katz
TITLE: Assimilation and Immigration into Industrial Life of Madison
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Madison post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1940

I arrived in Madison in the early morning of May 3, 2015. The sun was just starting to rise.  I was on a mission to visit a number of New Deal buildings. Madison was my first stop during this road trip.

The best thing about early morning road trips is that for the most part the roads are clear and not a lot of people are out. This makes it easy to get my photographs of the exteriors of the buildings. Since is was so early I wasn’t expecting the building to be open, but I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to enter the lobby.

I took my time viewing and enjoying the mural. I took my photographs and was on my way. I have lots to see today and it started off with a great visit to Madison.

What do you like about this mural? I think is kind of busy with a lot going on.  What do you know about the artists? This particular piece is also dark. What I mean is the colors of the mural, not the feeling.  Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
