Fremont Michigan Post Office

April 9, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Fremont MI Post Office 49412
Fremont MI Post Office 49412

ADDRESS: 19 S. Division Ave., Fremont, Michigan, 49412
ARTIST: Lumen Martin Winter
TITLE: Pony Express
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Fremont post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1938

The colors are amazing in the mural. That’s the first thing that sticks out for me when I view it. This was another stop during our summer 2015 vacation to Michigan.

Another thing I noticed about this building where the wonderful arched windows in front. I guess you are thinking to your self, why would someone notice these things? Or who does that and who would write about in a blog article like this.

Well my friends, me of course. That’s just what keeps my sail up on a non-windy day.

What do you think about this building or mural? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

O Fallon Illinois Post Office

March 26, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

O Fallon IL Post Office 62269
O Fallon IL Post Office 62269

ADDRESS: 1111 South Lincoln Avenue, O´Fallon, Illinois, 62269
ARTIST: Merlin F. Pollock
TITLE: John Mason Peck, First Postmaster Handing Out Mail – 1830
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS:  The former O´Fallon post office building was razed. However, the mural can be viewed in the new building shown here on Lincoln Ave. by interested members of the public. It resides on the wall above the retail counter.
YEAR: 1939

Looks like I might have skipped over this one while I was going through my final audit of Illinois New Deal Buildings. I tried really hard to find the original building, but was not successful. Here is what I did learn.

When I visited O´Fallon, I walked into bar and was greeted by two friendly locals. We I inquired about the old building the owner mentioned it had been demolished. When I asked what was in its place he mentioned a parking lot. I have not been able to officially confirm this but at lease I was able to find out a little bit about O´Fallon history.

The the conversation turned toward wanting to see the mural. The gentlemen told me the mural had been moved to the new building on Lincoln Ave. This sort of confirmed the creditability of his words as I already knew this piece of information.

When I returned home I spent some more time searching for the old building but came up empty-handed. I eventually contacted the local historical society. Low and behold one of the workers confirm the original building had been razed. He also mentioned their little museum has pictures of the old building.

Now I just need to visit O´Fallon again so I can visit their museum. Does anyone else out there have original pictures of the O´Fallon, Illinois building. I’ve love to hear from you. Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Hart Michigan Post Office

March 19, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Hart MI Post Office 49420
Hart MI Post Office 49420

ADDRESS: 135 S. State St., Hart, Michigan, 49420
ARTIST: Ruth Grotenrath
TITLE: Boy Rounding Up the Stock
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Hart post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. The mural resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1941

Today’s featured post office is the wonderful building in Hart, Michigan. I was able to visit this one during the summer of 2015.

A bit disappointed in the placement of the railing in front of the corner stone. But at least its not entirely covered up or destroyed.

This mural feels full to me. I mean all the subjects fill up the space on the canvas. The colors are bold maybe that’s why I get a full feeling when I view it. I also feel the artist made an effort to make the subject as large as possible because of the placement high above the postmasters door.

What do you think about this one? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
