Kearny New Jersey Post Office

June 1, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Kearny New Jersey Post Office 07032
Kearny New Jersey Post Office 07032

ADDRESS: 64 Midland Ave., Kearny, New Jersey 07032
ARTIST: Albert Kotin
TITLE: The City and The Marsh
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (murals) 2 panels
STATUS: The Kearny post office is still an active, operating facility, and the murals can be viewed by interested members of the public. Formally known as Arlington, the post office took on the Kearny name in the 1950s. One mural resides in the main lobby, and the other one resides in the retail section of the lobby.
YEAR: 1935

My first attempt to see this one failed as I arrived after hours and the lobby was closed. I came back the next day to photograph the murals.

I love the look of this building, and was quite impressed with the interior and lobby. One disappointment was the lights obstructing the murals in both locations.

In addition, the postal service placed a large TV monitor in front of the mural in the retail section of the lobby. Thus restricting the entire view of the work. A disappointment indeed but I did what I could to get the images you see below.

The entire arrangement in the retail section of the lobby made it difficult to get up close, and take the detail photographs that I like. On the left side there were was the writing desk and retail displays. The customers were also standing in line on the right side, making it difficult to get up close to the mural. Since this was a busy station, I decided not to stick around. I took the pictures I could and was on my way.

Linden New Jersey Post Office

June 1, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Linden New Jersey Post Office 07036
Linden New Jersey Post Office 07036

ADDRESS: 400 N. Wood Ave., Ste A, Linden, New Jersey 07036
ARTIST: Sahl Swarz
TITLE: Industry
MEDIUM: Terra-cotta (relief)
STATUS: The Linden post office is still an active, operating facility, and the relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1934

All the images I viewed of the Linden post office prior to my visit, indicated it being an extremely busy area. I anticipated waiting around a long time to get unobstructed images of the exterior of this one. You could imagine my surprise when a car directly in front of the building moved as I approached. The situation was perfect and I was able to fire off a few shots with no cars or people in the photographs. Score!

I hurried inside to get the relief images and was on my way. This particular situation made my day, as I dreaded waiting around in such a busy area. It was nice to see everyone wearing a mask, but I just didn’t want to be around a lot of people, after all, we are still in an pandemic.

Former Little Falls New Jersey Post Office

May 31, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

ADDRESS: 19 Warren St., Little Falls, New Jersey 07424
ARTIST: James Brooks
TITLE: Labor and Leisure
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The former Little Falls post office is no longer an active, operating facility. However, the mural still resides in the building. The mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. Interested parties should contact the Little Falls Civic Center for hours and availability.
YEAR: 1936

Initially I didn’t think I was going to be able to see this one. However, after calling the phone number listed on the front door, I was able to make immediate arrangements to see the mural. This was truly lucky timing as I was in and out in very little time.

The drawback to having such a concentrated trip is not being able to spend more time to really enjoy the mural and the immediate area. But I’m happy I called and made the visit.

Thanks to the director and local assistant and for the Civic Center for allowing me to see this. Especially during this difficult pandemic time.
