Goshen (built 1935-36)

ADDRESS: 20 Grand St, Goshen, NY 10924
ARTIST: Georgina Klitgaard
TITLE: The Hambletonian Stake
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Goshen post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on a wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1937

Goshen’s post office was built between 1935-36.  The mural is of the historic harness track in Goshen which was built in 1838 and is the longest continuous in-use horse track in the United States.  President Ulysses S. Grant once stayed at a hotel in Goshen which overlooked this track and allowed him to watch the races.

Thanks Doug,

Newcomerstown Ohio Post Office – Guest

January 8, 2022 By Doug

Newcomerstown
Newcomerstown

ADDRESS: 133 West Canal Street, Newcomerstown, Ohio 43832
ARTIST: Cesare Stea
TITLE: Men and Machines
MEDIUM: Plaster (relief)
STATUS: The Newcomers post office is still an active, operating facility, and the relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

I like this one a lot. What sticks out for me is the gold lettering and lamps on either side of the front entrance. This is perhaps the largest relief I’ve seen in a post office of this size. I love to see the cornerstone for this one.

I know wood carvings exist this large, but a plaster relief is quite unique.

Thanks Doug
