Selbyville Delaware Post Office

September 30, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Selbyville DE Post Office 19975
Selbyville DE Post Office 19975

ADDRESS: 23 Church St., Selbyville, Delaware 19975
ARTIST: William Howard. Calfee
TITLE: Chicken Farm
MEDIUM: Oil and termpera (mural)
STATUS: The Selbyville post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1942

Another wonderful stop compete with mural and challenging cornerstone to photograph. Nice weather and blue skies always make me happy when photographing the exterior of the buildings. I lucked out with the weather during this trip. I’m really happy with both the exterior building images and the mural is wonderful.

Selbyville was another building where the cornerstone is covered up with bushes. It was a bit of a challenge holding them back just enough so I could get a good photo of it. My preference would be a straight on image, but something this is difficult to achieve.

YEAR: 1938

I’m grateful for the wonderful weather, blue skies when I visited the Attica, Indiana post office. Unfortunately, the lobby is closed on Sunday’s and I was not able to see the mural. I’ll have to plan another trip.

Note to self: plan your next trip during business hours so you can see the mural.

Update, I was able to re-visit this one in February 2022 during business hours. I love the display case they have in the lobby. It has some great post office memorabilia from the past. Great historical display.

This was another stop during my August 2021 road trip. I almost bailed on trying to get here. The traffic was horrible with everyone trying to get to the beach. But I stuck with it to get there and get the building and mural images I wanted.

Monticello Indiana Post Office

YEAR: 1939

Another fine example of a post office mural. I had the chance to stop in this one during a recent road trip to Indianapolis. It was early on a Saturday morning and it appears the sun rises behind and to the right of the building. Note to self, if I get the chance to stop here again, it would be best to visit in the afternoon when the sun is shining on the front of the building.

The exterior images you see here are darker and not particularly my favorite.

Harrington Delaware Post Office

September 24, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Harrington DE Post Office 19952

ADDRESS: 2 Commerce St, Harrington, DE 19952
ARTIST: Eve Salisbury
TITLE: Men Hoeing
MEDIUM: Wax Tempera (mural)
STATUS: The Harrington post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1941

When I arrived in Harrington, the sun was behind the building making the images come out darker see below. I decided to circle back around in the afternoon for a better image of the front side of the building. This strategy worked out great.

The dedication plaque inside of this one is the larger size you often see in larger buildings. Of course I had to photograph it, but the retail display case was in the way. I was careful to move the display, take my photograph and get on with my day.

My only gripe about this one is the white Lexus off to the right, that apparently was not going to move anytime soon. This forced me to get angle shots with out the car in front. You can see a little of the car in some of the images, but for the most park I was able to get an un-obstructed photograph.

The plaque out in front of the building reads:

FIRST RURAL FREE DELIVERY ROUTE

For many years the National Grange and other organizations interested in the welfare of citizens residing in rural areas advocated the establishment of rural free delivery of mail. In  October 1896, the Post Office Department introduced experimental rural delivery in West Virginia. The new service was favorably received, and by June of the following year there were forty-four routes in operation in twenty-nine states.

On October 3, 1898, rural free delivery of mail in Delaware was initiated with the formal establishment of a route originating in Harrington. Joseph G. Peckman was appointed to servers carrier for the circuit, with an annual salary of $300. The route was seventeen and one quarter miles in length.

Approximately 600 families were served.

The establishment of the rural free delivery service resulted in the elimination of many small rural post offices. In 1902 alone, twenty-nine were closed in Delaware. By 1938, some 23,000 offices had been discontinued throughout the United States since the introduction of rural delivery.
