Woodsfield OH Post Office 43793

ADDRESS: 125 N Main St, Woodsfield, OH 43793
ARTISTS: Joseph Stott
TITLE: The Clearing
MEDIUM: Wood (carving)
STATUS: The Woodsfield post office is still an active, operating facility, and the carving can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1941

Another beautiful day for photographing post offices. This was another stop during my October 2022 road trip.

Great to see a wood carving, most as you know are murals and painted on canvas. This one is wood and on the larger size with a lot of detail.

Antwerp OH Post Office 45813

ADDRESS: 303 S Main St, Antwerp, OH 45813

Sometimes I get busy and and forget a building or two. Apparently, I visited Antwerp in 2015 but never created the article. I found it as I was sorting and cataloging my recent Ohio photos.

Hamilton Ohio Post Office

November 4, 2022 By David W. Gates Jr.

Hamilton OH Post Office 45011
Hamilton OH Post Office 45011

ADDRESS: 105 Court Street, Hamilton, Ohio 45011
ARTIST: Richard Zoellner
TITLE: Fort Hamilton, Agriculture and Industries of Hamilton (6 panels)
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Hamilton post office is still an active, operating facility, and the murals can be viewed by interested members of the public. Five reside in the main lobby on the wall above the front entrances. The sixth resides on the west wall above, the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1941

Hamilton was another stop during my October 2022 road trip. I wasn’t expecting such a large building or I just wasn’t thinking at the time I was planning the trip. I’m happy I didn’t need to wait long for an unobstructed view of the front.

This building has six individual panels, one large one above the postmaster and office door. The other five are half circles above the front entrances to the building.

The larger one above the postmaster’s door is a bit difficult to photograph. The light hanging from the ceiling makes it difficult to see and photograph.

They are all in great shape, and I suspect have been restored or touched up.

Granville Ohio Post Office

Granville OH Post Office 43023
Granville OH Post Office 43023

ADDRESS: 203 Broadway East, Granville, Ohio 43023
ARTIST: Wendell Jones
TITLE: First Pulpit in Granville
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Granville post office is still an active, operating facility. However, the mural has been reported missing, lost or destroyed. It previously resided in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1937

I arrived late in the day as one of my last stops during my October 2022 road trip. I actually didn’t think I was going to be able to photograph it. The daylight as draining fast but I was able to get a few good photos.

Once I was done there, I headed over to the Granville public library to upload and save all the images I had taken for the day. I’ve learned that saving my images at the end of the day is a good idea.

Miamisburg Ohio Former Post Office

November 2, 2022 By David W. Gates Jr.

Miamisburg OH Former Post Office 45342
Miamisburg OH Former Post Office 45342

ADDRESS: 305 East Central Avenue, Miamisburg, Ohio 45342
ARTIST: Leo Schulemowitz
TITLE: Indian and Trader
MEDIUM: Wood (relief)
STATUS: The postal service vacated the original building shown here, which housed a wood relief. It has been moved to the newer postal facility on Heincke road. The wood relief can be viewed by interested members of the public at the newer facility. It resides in the retail section of the lobby and is best viewed during business hours.
YEAR: 1942

The former Miamisburg, Ohio post office is now the home to the Miamisburg Parks and Recreations Center. I was lucky enough to visit during business hours and to see part of the inside of this remodeled former post office.

Although much of the character of the old building has been modernized, it still has the features and bones of an old post office.

In addition the community center has done a wonderful job framing and displaying the historical construction photos. What a treat to see.

Obviously the building has been added on to the left side, which houses offices and other meeting rooms for the community center.

The original lettering for the city name remains on the front of the building but the lettering for post office is no longer displayed. I forgot to ask if they still have that around somewhere.
