North Carolina post offices (A-L group) from my recent trip, September of 2022; a few were taken in 2016 (Asheboro, Cedar Falls, Franklinville) which I somehow hadn’t posted. The old main post office in Elizabeth City opened in 1906 and lasted as such until 1970. It’s still used as a U.S. Courthouse and is on the list of National Register of Historic Places.

TITLE: The Farmer
MEDIUM: Fresco (Mural)
STATUS: The Worthington post office is still an active, operating facility, and the relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall near the south entrance/side entrance.
YEAR: 1940
I was happy to get this one as one of the very last stops during my October 2022 road trip. However, the sun was behind the building so it was a challenge to get a good photo. I dislike it when the pictures are dark and it’s hard to see the front of the buildings.

Tennessee post offices combines the old and new with the modern ones from 2000 and some like the Downtown Knoxville which opened in 1932. Loudon; built 2000.

TITLE: Scioto County Settler?
MEDIUM: Terra-cotta (relief)
STATUS: The Worthington post office is still an active, operating facility, and the relief can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall near the south entrance/side entrance.
YEAR: 1939
The newer sign above the front entrance is ugly for this historic building. The remodel done in the past also took away the charm and character of the building.
Sometimes buildings should just be left alone. Cleaned up but otherwise left alone. This is one of those cases where it would have been better to leave the existing building as it was meant to be.
Add the addition and all the new updates per regulatory requirements, but leave the old building alone and put the relief where it was meant to be. Ok, I’m done venting now.

Update:
Readers should be aware the title of this one may be titled incorrectly. The Democratic Vista’s book. Park & Markowitz list the title as: Scioto Company Settler, where the original photographed pulled from the National Archives list the title as Scioto County Settler. What is the official title? We’ll need to investigate further, but the artist may have intended the title to reference the founders who were known as the Scioto Company. Interesting indeed.

TITLE: The Daily Mail
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The former Westerville post office is no longer an active, operating facility. The mural was moved to the newer facility on McCorkle Boulevard and can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall behind the retail counter.
YEAR: 1937
I waited around at the other Westerville post office to see the mural. However, it was not located at the building, it was located here.
It’s been framed and placed behind the retail counter. It is easy to see but is locked up with a gate during non-business hours. There are also some historical photos of the old building behind the other retail counter.
