Thanks,

Ellicott City Maryland Former Post Office

April 30, 2024 By David W. Gates Jr.

Ellicott City MD Post Office 21043
Ellicott City MD Post Office 21043

ADDRESS: 8267 Main St, Ellicott City, MD 21043
ARTIST: Peter DeAnna
TITLE: Building of Ellicott Mills and Landscape of Ellicott City.
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (murals)
STATUS: The Ellicott City former post office is no longer an active postal facility. It is home to the Howard County Visitors center. The murals still reside here and can be viewed by interested members of the public. One mural resides on the west side of the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door. The other two reside on the east side of the lobby on either side of the large window.
YEAR: 1940

It’s hard to believe it has been almost a years since I visited this one. Apparently, I must have been in a hurry as I did not video. The two short videos I did uncover were crappy.

I do remember talking to the gentlemen staffing the visitor center. We had a wonderful discussion and I explained my mission to visit all the murals in all fifty states. While we were talking some other visitors entered and I chatted up the guest. The couple had been to the Bethesda post office and had mentioned that mural while were talking.

The two on the east side of the lobby are difficult to photograph. The large window between the two panels made it difficult to see. Had I been thinking more cleaning I would have had the staff close the blinds. That may have given me a better photograph. So note to self, if and when you get the chance to visit again. Maybe on a cloudy day, I could get a better photograph of the two on the east wall.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Dennison Ohio Post Office

April 11, 2024 By David W. Gates Jr.

Dennison OH Post Office 44621

ADDRESS: 115 N 3rd St Ste 2, Dennison, OH 44621
ARTIST: Edmund Joseph Sawyer
TITLE: Passenger Pigeon
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Dennison post office is still an active, operating facility and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. The mural resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

Spring break visit in March of 2024 brought us through Dennison, Ohio. Honestly, spring break was being with my son. But since we had a long drive home from DC to Illinois, I wanted to at least stop at one post office during our week. If all else failed, this was the one I had targeted.

A bit disappointed to discover the mural is covered in glass. I’m glad someone took the time to protect it, but it does distract from the viewers enjoyment of it. The glare from the lights and the sunshine coming in from the windows is really distracting. Not to mention trying to photograph it. The frame also does not appear to be original as I’m sure it was added to hold the glass in place. The glare also made it difficult to photograph the signature in the lower right corner.

However, I’m also delighted to see the historical construction photos.

Special thanks to my son for putting up with the long drive, assisting me in filming.

We managed to get a few good pictures and video. Special thanks to my son for putting up with the long drive, assisting me in filming.

Shot the video without having the microphone on. First few video’s I was also saying the art was a wood carving. When actually it’s plaster. But subsequent video’s I reported it as Terra-cotta.

This was a nice little town, and I had no idea it was the home to Kenyon College. There is a nice bookstore across the street. Had I done a little more research prior to visiting, I think it would have been nice to grab a cup of coffee or maybe even a sandwich and sit outside to enjoy the area and the handsome stone post office.
