ADDRESS: 120 W. Country Club Blvd., Big Bear City, California 92314

So they say pictures are worth a thousand words. I’ve also heard that getting there is half the fun. Well, while I was hiking the Pacific Crest trail in 2010 I had to visit the Big Bear City Post Office. I did not need to visit. I didn’t have anything shipped to myself during this section of the trail.

The first reason I wanted to visit the post office is that I heard their was a hiker register and I wanted to read and sign it. For those of my readers who are unfamiliar with the hiking world a hiker register is nothing more than a notebook where thru-hikers sign in. Its sort of old-fashioned way of communicating while on the trail. when a hikers gets to the register he can read who has signed in. Hikers often communicate to other hikers and offer their thoughts and musings on their experience.  Anyway, this was one reason I wanted to visit Big Bear City.

The other reason I wanted to visit is that I also heard the postmaster here also takes your picture and puts it up on the wall of the lobby.  So there you go, my face is on the wall of the Big Bear post office. Reflecting on this experience I wish I had spent more time talking to the postmaster. When I visited I was so wrapped up in my hiking that I didn’t think to inquire why or how this whole thing got started. One of my goals is to revisit post offices like this and follow-up on all those unanswered questions I have. Unless, the postmaster is reading this and answers them before I get a chance to contact him.

Folks that’s what taking pictures of post office is all about. I’m almost certain that if you are not already familiar with the hiking world or the Pacific Crest Trail. Even if you have never been to the Big Bear post office you may never even know about this little know fact. That is what makes traveling so exciting for me.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
