Coatesville Pennsylvania Post Office – Guest

April 22, 2022 By Roger

Coatesville
Coatesville

ADDRESS: 230 E. Chestnut Street, Coatesville, PA 19320.

Visited March 28, 2022. 230 E. Chestnut Street, Coatesville, PA 19320. Not a New Deal Post Office but still very cool. Cornerstone is visible but the date isn’t . Treasurer Ogden L. Mills served under Hoover from 1932-1933; he was Under Secretary under Coolidge from 1927-1932. Presumably the building was built in this timeframe. I’ll send additional photos under separate email.

Arthurdale West Virginia Post Office – Guest

April 21, 2022 By Roger

Arthurdale
Arthurdale

ADDRESS: 13258 N. Mountaineer Highway, Arthurdale, WV 26520.

I visited this post office on April 4, 2022. There’s not a lot of information about the building’s history that I could find. What’s interesting is that the town of Arthurdale was a New Deal project championed by Eleanor Roosevelt. It’s possible that the post office building dates back to the 1930s; I couldn’t see a visible cornerstone. Nothing of interest inside; very small. Address is  The Government sold the properties to the homeowners in 1941. Most of the old buildings comprise of a historic district and museum. The town survives as does the post office.

Roger,

Staunton Virginia Post Office – Guest

April 2, 2022 By Roger

Staunton VA
Staunton VA

ADDRESS: 123 W. Frederick Street, Staunton, VA 24401
ARTIST: Florence Bessom
TITLE: The McCormick Reaper
MEDIUM: Terra-cotta (relief)
STATUS: The Staunton post office is still an active post office; relief hangs on wall in very small lobby. A plaque on the wall states that the relief was discovered in 2003 while the building was being renovated. It measures approximately 3’ x 7.5’. Commissioned by the Treasury Department Section of Paintings and Sculptures.
YEAR: 1935

Recently was in Staunton, Virginia and came across this great looking New Deal Post Office Building. Part of the building (center 1st Floor) still serves as a small, downtown Post Office; ( the Main “modern” Post Office is now on the outskirts of town); and there are two, private businesses on either side of the station.

Best Regards, Roger
