STATUS: The Glen Ellyn post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmasters door.

WOW! Check out the building and mural? See the funny thing is, we visited the newer post office first before heading to the downtown area to visit this one. So as you can imagine the contrast between the two buildings, is really is quit amazing.

I still vividly recall walking into this Glen Ellyn building and nervously entering the “Postmaster” door located directly under the mural for my job interview for a letter carrier position. Here I am retired after 40 years, and this stately structure still holds court over downtown Glen Ellyn, despite management plans to discontinue its use. The mural is indeed remarkable and was lovingly restored several years ago. The lobby was indeed beautiful with the original vintage post office boxes which were replaced in the 1980’s. When I started in 1970, we had already outgrown this building , with carrier and sorting operations taking place across the street in an abandoned store. Finally, in the late 1970’s, we took occupancy of our new larger building. But, the old building remains as a postal retail, storage and training facility. I always loved this wonderful building, and held a Post Office box in it until I retired….just wanted an excuse to visit, I am sure.
