Bordentown New Jersey Post Office

May 27, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Bordentown New Jersey Post Office 08505
Bordentown New Jersey Post Office 08505

ADDRESS: 14 Walnut St., Bordentown, New Jersey 08505
ARTIST: Avery Fischer Johnson
TITLE: Skating on Bonaparte’s Pond
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The Bordentown post office is still an active, operating facility, and the mural can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door. The Bordentown mural was the winner in the 48 state mural competition.
YEAR: 1938

Last week from May 18th through the 23rd 2021, I took a road trip to New Jersey. My goal was to visit the Fort Lee building and meet with the mayor to help convince him not to demolish their historic post office.

In addition I also stop at 46 other buildings, Bordentown was another visit during my trip to New Jersey. They don’t keep the lobby open after hours and by the time I made it here on the 19th, it was closed. Wonderful sunny weather for outside photographs.

This is another example where I think the lights should be brought up flush with the ceiling for a better, unobstructed view of the mural.

I ended up heading back to Bordentown two days later to get inside mural images you see below. This is a very nice mural and the 48 state mural competition winners for New Jersey.

UPDATE

I didn’t have to re-visit the Bordentown building, but I wanted a better early morning photograph. Back in May, I visited late in the afternoon and the sun sets behind the building. The photographs I had were dark and not what I wanted since I’m using this one as the cover of the guidebook. So in August I re-visited and the weather was perfect for new photographs. I’m satisfied.

Boonton New Jersey Post Office

May 27, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Boonton New Jersey Post Office 07005
Boonton New Jersey Post Office 07005

ADDRESS: 501 Main St., Boonton, New Jersey 07005
ARTIST: Enid Bell
TITLE: Morning Mail
MEDIUM: Wood (relief)
STATUS: The original Boonton post office is no longer extent. The relief was moved to the newer building shown here. It can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides on the wall in the retail section of the main lobby. It is only viewable during business hours.
YEAR: 1939

During my recent road trip to New Jersey, I stopped by the Boonton, New Jersey post office to photograph the wood carving.  Boonton did not disappoint. They even have a wonderful Mr. Zippy in the lobby. Very cool!

It was a bit of a disappoint to see the carving covered up by the retail display. I completely understand the post office needs to operate a business and the carving was never intended to be displayed in this spot. However, it was nice to see the carving in good condition.

I wonder how many people miss this as they visit the post office?

It was exciting to read and see an historic photograph of the old post office on the Town’s website from the 1970s. As I was doing my research I happened to stumble on this. I’ll add the link below in the sources section.

The postmaster and staff were accommodating in allowing me to move the display in order to get unobstructed views and photographs of the work.

Thank you Boonton postal staff and postmistress.

Atlantic City New Jersey Post Office

May 26, 2021 By David W. Gates Jr.

Atlantic City New Jersey Post Office 08401
Atlantic City New Jersey Post Office 08401

ADDRESS: 1801 Atlantic Ave., Ste 101, Atlantic City, New Jersey 08401
ARTIST: Peppino Mangravite
TITLE: Family Recreations, and Youth
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (murals) 2 panels
STATUS: The former Atlantic City post office was razed. The murals were moved to the new building shown here. The murals reside behind glass cases in the main lobby of the building. They can be viewed by interested members of the public during business hours.
YEAR: 1939

Last week from May 18th through the 23 I took a road trip to New Jersey. My goal was to visit the Fort Lee building and meet with the Mayor to help convince him not to demolish their historic post office.

In addition I also stopped at the Atlantic City, New Jersey building. This of course is the newer building which replaced the historic post office built in the 1930s.

The murals are huge and hard to photograph in the glass cases. They were meant to be viewed from a distance high up on a wall. I’m thankful they were saved and on display for the public, but it does take away from the viewer when you have them placed so low to the ground and can’t step back to see the entire panels.

The lobby is very narrow, so the best view you can get of the entire work is from the angle or up close details, which is also nice.

This is the original post office building. It has since been demolished. However, the two murals that were once installed here, have been moved to the newer post office building.
