ADDRESS: 116 E. Church St., Barnesville, Ohio, 43713
ARTIST: Michael Aloysius Sarisky
TITLE: Airmail
MEDIUM: Mural
STATUS: The Barnesville post office is still an active, operating facility. However, the mural has been reported missing, lost or destroyed. It previously resided in the lobby on the wall above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1937

Guest Post – Roger

David,

This active post office was completed in 1934.  The mural is missing and the employees that I spoke with inside do not know what happened to it.  I found an article about the missing mural and will send it to you.

The missing mural was named “Airmail” and was painted by Michael Sarisky in 1937; oil on canvas; commissioned by the Treasury of Fine Arts. Fairly busy post office in a nice town with a lot of history and annual events such as a Pumpkin Festival. Another wonderful building in Barnesville, Ohio.

Best Regards,
Roger

When I create an article such as this one and there is mystery around some fact or figure I like to tag the article with “HELP”. The mural is missing from this building and very little is known surrounding its disappearance.

I’ve written about this in other articles and from other states and hope to get the word out in case someone out there has more information about it. If you do, please contact us as we would love to learn more about it. I’m not interested in getting anyone in trouble, I just really want to learn more about it.

Thanks again Roger for great photos of the building.

The mural in Bridgeport was one of the winning entries of the 48-States Mural Competition. It was painted by Richard Kenah and installing in 1940. I love the colors and feeling of this mural.

Nashville Arkansas Post Office

September 7, 2018 By David W. Gates Jr.

Nashville AR Post Office 71852
Nashville AR Post Office 71852

ADDRESS: 220 N Main St., Nashville, Arkansas, 71852
ARTIST: John T. Robertson
TITLE: Peach Growing
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The mural resides in the lobby above the postmaster’s door.
YEAR: 1939

Is it just me or does the guy in this mural remind you of Freddy Krueger? That was the first thing that came to my mind as I was viewing this mural.

Nashville, was another post office visit during a family vacation back in April of this year. It was raining but, we headed over to the post office anyway. I think we got there right before they closed. Raining wet days are my leas favorite times for photographing these buildings, but since I’m in Arkansas miles away from home, I’ll take what I can get.

The mural is in the retail section of the lobby, which has been enclosed with glass as you can see in the lobby images.

Another challenging corner stone image. Sometimes I wish I had a chain saw to cut the bushes just to get a good photograph of the corner stone. But since I don’t and that would probably be frowned upon, I’ll stick with the angled shot.

Enjoy!

David W. Gates Jr.
