Former Salem Illinois Post Office

March 12, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Former Salem IL Post Office 62881
Former Salem IL Post Office 62881

ADDRESS: 217 West Main Street, Salem, Illinois 62881
ARTIST: Vladimir Rousseff
TITLE: Lincoln as Postmaster in New Sale
MEDIUM: Oil on canvas (mural)
STATUS: The former Salem post office is now a local business. The mural was relocated to local library and can be viewed by interested members of the public. It resides in a conference room.
YEAR: 1938

What was once a post office is now the home to Raymond James. Since it was a weekend when I visited I was not able to view the inside of the building. I like the patriotic sign in front of the building and above the door.

The mural was moved to the local library and I just made it in time before closing on the Saturday I visited. I must publicly thank the staff of the Salem library for allowing me access to the mural. I know it was just before closing but I can’t thank you enough, especially since I drove so far to view it.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.

Since the mural was moved to the new Library it appears it is only accessible to viewers who ask. It’s not in the open for all to see. It’s tucked in an employee conference room in the back of the building.

Luckily I was able to view this before the library was closing for the day. What do you think of this mural. Please comment and share below.

Former Peoria Illinois Post Office – Courthouse

March 5, 2016 By David W. Gates Jr.

Former Peoria IL Post Office 61601
Former Peoria IL Post Office 61601

ADDRESS: 100 North East Monroe Street., Peoria, Illinois, 61601
ARTIST: Freeman Schoolcraft
TITLE: Postal Service, Native Indian, Agriculture, and Industry
MEDIUM: Limestone (reliefs)
STATUS: The Peoria courthouse is still an active, operating facility. However, the post offices no longer operates out of this building. The reliefs can be viewed by interested members of the public. They reside on the exterior of the building.
YEAR: 1939

Another beautiful day for photographing old post offices. These were taken back in June of 2015. Here is why I’m just posting it now. See I take road trips and perform my site visits way in advanced of ever creating the articles. So when I return I have a backlog of photos that need to be sorted, saved and renamed. After this is done I then need to resize the photos. After I resize the photos I need to create the article you are now enjoying.

All this work means I have a pretty large backlog of work that needs to get done. Eventually as the winter months keep me inside more I’ll be able to catch up. But for now please enjoy the beautiful former Peoria post office and court-house.

I was pleasantly surprised these are located on the exterior of the building. No need to wait for the lobby to open or to have other objects in the way. I can just walk up and start photographing. What are your thoughts of limestone reliefs? Please comment and share below.

Thanks,

David W. Gates Jr.
