STATUS:  The mural no longer resides in the original building shown here it has since been moved to the new post office building located on Dotty Street. The mural is in the main lobby.
YEAR: 1938

This one is a good story. I was driving around searching for post offices. When I entered Kaukauna I immediately found the newer post office. However, my research lead me to believe it was an older post office with a mural. So naturally when I arrived at the newer building I was a bit disappointed. I’ll highlight the newer building tomorrow, but today’s featured post office is the original or former Kaukauna Wisconsin Post Office.

Thanks to the employees at the local McDonald’s who gave me directions.

It appears this building has made it onto the Register of Historic Places and will be preserved. According to this Wikipedia Article.

Come back tomorrow to view the newer Kaukauna Post Office and the mural that once resided in this classic WPA era building. Move to the new building in 1988

The Kohler post office is a part of the local government building. There are other agencies in the same building. The inside of the post office is actually really small. I wanted in the lobby to get a picture of the dedication plaque. I felt rude asking people to move so I just waited. And some times that just the way it is.

Finding post offices is sometimes frustrating. The downtown Janesville post office is a perfect example. I must have drove past this building two or thee times looking for any sign of a post office. What did I eventually do?, you guessed it. I parked the car and started walking. I wasn’t really prepared to find it inside a mall, but that is exactly where this one is located. Inside this multi-use mall sort of building.

I’m glad I didn’t give up on this one. I was rewarded with a few nice old framed photographs on the wall of the lobby. It is always a treat to see old artifacts and pictures like this. Thanks to the person or people who made this possible.
